Chapter 1
“What did you just say?” Sarah whispered, her voice trembling so badly that the words almost disappeared into the evening air. Tears streamed endlessly down her cheeks as she stared at George, praying she had heard wrong.
George stood across from her with an expression that was almost painfully calm. “I said,” he replied after a brief pause, “let's end whatever we had.”
A broken laugh escaped Sarah's lips. “No...” She shook her head repeatedly. “You're joking.”
“I'm not.”
“You're angry about something.” Sarah searched George's face desperately, hoping to find even the smallest trace of emotion. “Tell me what I did. I'll apologize.”
“This isn't about an apology.”
“Then what is it about?” Sarah cried. “You don't throw away years like this without a reason.”
George sighed quietly before folding his arms. “People change, Sarah.”
Sarah stared at him in disbelief. “That's it?” she asked. “That's your reason?”
“Yes.”
“No.” Sarah shook her head harder. “No, that's not enough. We were fine yesterday. You called me before you slept. You texted me this morning. How do people change overnight?”
George lowered his eyes without answering.
Sarah stepped closer and reached for his hand, but George moved back before their fingers could meet.
The simple movement felt like someone had driven a knife into Sarah's heart. “You don't even want me touching you anymore?” she asked, barely above a whisper.
“I think it's better this way.”
“Don't tell me what's better for me.” Sarah wiped her tears with trembling hands before forcing George to look at her. “Look at me.”
George slowly lifted his head.
“Do you still love me?”
Silence stretched painfully between them. Sarah held her breath.
Finally, George spoke. “I’m sorry...”
Sarah staggered backward until the edge of a nearby bench stopped her from falling. “No...” she whispered. “You don't mean that. You promised me we'd never leave each other,” Sarah said, tears pouring freely. “You promised we'd face everything together.”
“I know.”
“Then why?” she shouted, no longer caring who was watching. “Why are you doing this?”
A few people at nearby tables glanced over before quietly returning to their conversations.
George took a slow breath. “Because there's someone else.”
Sarah blinked. The words didn't hurt immediately, but instead, they confused her. “Someone else?” she repeated. “What do you mean?”
“I've fallen in love with someone else.”
Sarah frowned. “She?”
The single word shattered what little hope Sarah had left.
“She?” Sarah whispered.
George nodded. “I've fallen in love with another woman.”
Sarah stared at him as though she had never seen him before. “I don't understand,” she said weakly. “Since when?”
“For a while.” George shrugged, pressing his both lips together. “A few months.”
Sarah let out a shaky laugh. “A few months?” she repeated. “All this time... while we were still together?”
George didn't answer.
Sarah already knew the truth. “All those dates...” she whispered. “The gifts? The times you told me you loved me?”
George looked away. “I didn't want to hurt you.”
“But you lied to me.” Sarah laughed bitterly.
George remained quiet.
Sarah's breathing became uneven. “Tell me one thing.” She swallowed hard. “What does she have that I don't?”
George exhaled sharply. “This isn't about comparing the two of you.”
“Then explain it to me!” Sarah snapped. “You just don't want to.”
George rubbed his forehead. “I've changed. She makes me feel... happy. Alive. I can't keep pretending because we've been together for years.”
Sarah looked at him in disbelief. “So that's it? You're throwing away everything we built because someone new makes you feel excited?”
George faced her. “You deserve someone who truly loves you.”
Sarah laughed through her tears. “And you think saying that makes this hurt less?” She replied bitterly. “It just makes you feel less guilty.”
George's jaw tightened. “You can't expect me to stay because of history.”
“So history means nothing now?” Sarah felt as though someone had ripped the air from her lungs.
George was supposed to be the love of her life. They had started dating in high school when everything had been simple. Sarah had believed they would grow older together. Every plan for the future had somehow included George. Now, all those years are being reduced to a single sentence.
Neither of them noticed the woman approaching until a gentle voice interrupted the silence. “George?”
Both of them turned.
A young woman walked toward them with a warm smile. The moment George saw her, his expression softened in a way Sarah hadn't seen all evening.
The woman stopped beside George. “I’m sorry for interrupting. I’ve been waiting for you.”
Sarah looked from her to George. Without hesitation, George reached for the woman's hand, and their fingers intertwined naturally.
Sarah's heart broke all over again. “George...” she whispered.
George looked uncomfortable. “This is... Maya.”
Maya offered Sarah a small smile. “Hi. You must be Sarah.”
Sarah looked at their joined hands, then back at George. “You brought her here?”
She raised her voice. “You actually brought her here?!!!”
“Calm down,” George said. “I thought it was better if everything was out in the open.”
Sarah stared at him. “You thought this was better?” She let out a hollow laugh. “You're unbelievable.”
Maya shifted awkwardly. “I think maybe I should—”
Before she could finish speaking, something inside Sarah snapped. Her hand moved before her mind could stop it.
Smack!
The sharp sound echoed across the café. Maya stumbled backward, one hand flying to her cheek.
“George...” Maya whispered, stunned.
George immediately stepped in front of her, placing himself between Sarah and Maya. “Sarah!”
He turned quickly to Maya. “Are you okay?”
Maya nodded slowly, still holding her cheek. Only then did George face Sarah again with anger obvious in his eyes. “You had no right to touch her! She didn't do anything to you.”
“You're protecting her?” Sarah felt tears burn her eyes. “She took you away from me!”
“No,” George replied firmly. “I made my own choice.”
Sarah looked at him in disbelief. “So that's it? You're choosing her.”
“Yes! I'm choosing her.”
Those four words crushed the last piece of Sarah's heart. She looked from George, to Maya, and back again. The future she had imagined was standing right in front of her as it slipped away forever.
George's voice turned cold. “You need to leave.”
Sarah didn't move.
“I said leave!” George snapped.
Sarah laughed quietly, though there was no joy in it. “I can't believe this is how we end.”
For a long moment, she simply looked at George, and finally understood one painful truth. Sometimes, the hardest goodbyes weren't the loud ones.
They were the quiet ones... spoken by the person you loved most, while they walked away without ever looking back.
