Chapter 2
Three days later, the appointment was set at a private clinic owned by the Silver Moon Pack. Rosalie, now the Luna of the pack, had arranged for a luxury medical vehicle to transport them. The sleek black SUV bore the pack’s emblem—a silver crescent moon—on its doors, a subtle reminder of the hierarchy Kamryn no longer belonged to.
Kamryn sat stiffly in the backseat, her hands gripping the armrests of her wheelchair. It was only then that she realized it was Bryan, the Beta of the pack, and Rosalie who had reached out to Dr. Henry Rice, the renowned healer known for his expertise in treating werewolf injuries. The irony wasn’t lost on her. The same people who had orchestrated her suffering were now trying to mend it.
“Kamryn, did you know that Bryan truly cares about you?” Rosalie’s voice broke the silence, her tone saccharine sweet. “He stood outside the healer’s den for an entire day to convince him to see you. From dawn till dusk, his legs were so tired it took over two weeks for him to recover.”
Kamryn’s jaw tightened. She turned her head slightly, her gaze sharp as she broke the silence with a question that cut through the air like a knife. “So, were you the one who took care of him during that time?”
The car fell silent, the tension thickening like a storm cloud. Rosalie let out a nervous laugh, her fingers fidgeting with the hem of her dress. “Of course not, the pack healer did. Bryan just sent me the pictures.”
Bryan, seated in the front passenger seat, frowned. His broad shoulders tensed, and his voice turned icy, the authority of a Beta seeping into his tone. “Even if Rosalie did look after me, what does it matter? We’re family.”
Kamryn’s lips curled into a bitter smile. Family. The word felt like a slap. They were indeed family—Bryan, the loyal Beta, and Rosalie, the perfect Luna. And she? She was merely an outsider, a pawn in their twisted game.
At the clinic, Rosalie had arranged for Kamryn to undergo a thorough examination. The facility was state-of-the-art, a testament to the Silver Moon Pack’s wealth and influence. Dr. Henry Rice was already in the exam room, surrounded by several leading healers from other packs. They were reviewing Kamryn’s previous medical records, their voices low as they discussed initial treatment plans.
Kamryn’s fingers tapped nervously on the armrest of her wheelchair, her heart pounding with a flicker of hope. If her leg could truly be healed this time, she was willing to let go of holding Bryan accountable for his role in her suffering. But that was as far as she could go. She could never be with him again without resentment, nor could she cultivate affection for someone who had once betrayed her. It was like trying to mend a shattered mirror; some things could never be the same.
Once all the exam results were ready, Rosalie held them in her hands, her expression unreadable. Bryan pushed Kamryn into the consultation room, his presence looming behind her like a shadow. Kamryn’s breath quickened with anxiety as they entered the room where the formal diagnosis would begin.
Dr. Henry Rice was a tall, imposing figure with silver streaks in his hair and an air of quiet authority. His reputation as a healer was legendary, known for combining traditional pack remedies with modern medicine. His hand was just about to touch Kamryn’s leg when a maid from the Silver Moon Pack burst in, her face pale with panic. In her arms was an injured wolf pup, its fur matted with blood.
“Luna,” the maid gasped, addressing Rosalie with the respect her title demanded. “Something terrible has happened. Buddy accidentally fell from a height. No healer in the area can save him. I brought him here just so you could see him one last time…”
Rosalie’s face crumpled, and she gently took the pup from the maid, cradling it in her arms. Tears streamed down her face as she whispered, “Buddy… my Buddy…”
Suddenly, she turned to Dr. Rice, her eyes pleading. “Please, I beg you, save him. Save my Buddy.”
Dr. Rice’s face darkened immediately, his gaze shifting to Bryan for his decision. After all, the consultation had been arranged through the Beta’s appeal.
Bryan hesitated, his jaw tightening as he weighed the options. Rosalie turned to him, her tears glistening in the light. “Bryan, Buddy was a gift from you, remember? You said he would keep me company like you do. Both you and Buddy are the most important to me. I can’t bear to lose either of you. Please, save Buddy.”
Bryan sighed, his shoulders slumping in resignation. “Alright, we’ll help Buddy,” he said, his voice softening as he pulled Rosalie into his arms. He gently patted her back, his tone tender. “Don’t cry, Rosalie. Seeing you cry breaks my heart.”
Kamryn watched the scene unfold, her heart hardening with each passing second. The flicker of hope she had felt earlier was extinguished, replaced by a cold, unyielding resolve. She would never forget this moment—the moment she realized where she truly stood in their world.
