We cried together for quite a while, and only then did Mom stop crying.

"The doctor said you've got a fracture and you'll need a long time to heal. Did Tracy push you?" Mom asked.

That was when I realized Tracy was in the room too.

Tracy, looking pale and anxious, was standing off to the side. She kept muttering, "I didn't push her. She jumped."

Mom tucked the blanket tightly around me, then rose and moved toward Tracy, her voice raspy with fury. "You think you can bully my daughter?"
