Chapter 3
Robert's forehead was already beading with sweat, but he still tried to act tough as he pointed at the bodyguards.
He barked, "What are you all standing around for? Hurry up and throw this ungrateful charity case who's spouting nonsense out of here."
"Something's off," John muttered as he shot a confused look at Robert.
He said, "With William's sense of justice, there's no way he'd blindly acknowledge just anyone as his granddaughter.
"I'd even planned to introduce my son to William's granddaughter, and William always said he'd have to give the green light to whomever his granddaughter would marry. So why isn't he here for the engagement party?"
That made Robert and Yara even more nervous.
Robert shot John a hostile glare and asked, "Mr. Davis, what are you trying to say? Are you suggesting I can't even recognize my own daughter? Or is there something shady going on between you and this fraud pretending to be my kid?"
Vincent chimed in, "You really think a father wouldn't know his own daughter? And you claim you two aren't working together? Are you trying to mess up my engagement party with Yara on purpose?"
Now, even John, who had just spoken up for me, was getting baselessly accused by everyone.
Everyone had his back, and Robert finally exhaled in relief. Then he turned to me with nothing but disgust.
I'd always known he wasn't fond of me, and honestly, I never bothered to get close to him either.
Now it seemed he didn't even care about my mother. How ironic that he had merely pretended to be devoted and swore he would never marry again.
Robert snapped, "Are you going to leave on your own, or do we have to throw you out? I was way too soft on you before, but today I finally see your true colors."
I let out a cold laugh and shot back, "Funny, because today I finally see what kind of wannabe big shot you really are.
"You want me to leave? Who are you to tell me that? Honestly, looks like you're the one who's about to get kicked out!"
Robert was shaking with rage as he stormed over and gave me another slap. He snarled, "You want me gone? I made your dream possible, and this is how you repay me?"
He hit me so hard that my ears were ringing, and blood started trickling from my mouth.
I spat out the blood and stared right at the man I'd called Dad for over twenty years. I sneered, "You are a worthless live-in son-in-law who brought in an impostor to take my place. Why shouldn't you be the one getting kicked out?"
They were so pissed at my words that they just laughed.
Yara leaned into Vincent with a pout. She said, "Vincent, do you think she's obsessed with you because you're perfect? She can't stand being without you; she wants to steal you from me."
Robert rubbed his furrowed brow. He snapped, "Do you think you can act all high and mighty just because William felt sorry for you and let you stay?
"Someone, get her out of here!"
If I was really dragged away, who knows if I'd even make it out alive.
It was clear Robert was set on letting Yara steal my spot.
If I died, he'd have the perfect excuse to go to William and push for Yara to be crowned as the Lynch family's heiress.
He had really got some nerve.
"Who dares lay a finger on me? Doesn't everyone know who's really in charge of the Lynch family?" I snapped, my voice icy.
The bodyguards froze, and the guests started whispering among themselves.
"She's acting so fearless. Could she really be the Lynch family's real heiress?"
"Robert might look like the boss, but everyone knows William's still calling the shots behind the scenes. John and Robert both said she's been with William all this time. Maybe she really is the real deal."
Yara's face showed a flicker of panic as she clung to Robert's sleeve. She said, "Dad, look at her. She's pulling the William card again. Everyone knows William only cares about his research anyway."
Robert immediately caught on and let out a cold, mocking laugh. He said, "Of course. Just more lies. Now she's trying to use William as her backup.
"If William ever found out you were bullying his real granddaughter, do you really think he'd still have your back?"
I stared calmly at the two, watching them twist the truth, then raised my phone for everyone to see.
I said, "Why do you think I'm so sure Grandpa will be back?"
Robert was acting all cool and collected, but his hands were shaking.
William never liked Robert, and Robert was always nervous whenever William was around.
Robert immediately barked at his men to snatch my phone. He snapped, "This is Yara's engagement party. No way I'm letting some outsider stir up trouble by waving her phone around.
"Whoever grabs her and throws her out gets triple pay."
Vincent nodded at his own bodyguards. He said, "Work with the Lynch family's guys and get this crazy woman out of here. Nobody's ruining the Lynch and Harris families getting hitched today."
As soon as he finished speaking, more than twenty bodyguards in black rushed at me.
