Chapter 5

The car roared past, clipping my left shoulder and knocking me hard onto the side of the street.

Blinding pain seared through my left arm. Then, I felt nothing but numbness.

Tommy stuck his head out the window, grinning down with that shrill, triumphant laugh. "Sorry, Mary. I'm in a hurry to see my mom, so I won't be seeing you off."

I stared up at Tommy's cocky, gloating face, my chest so tight I could barely breathe.

I lowered my eyes and murmured, "Don't bother seeing me off."

"Don't ever bother seeing me off again," I said.
