"Also, be careful not to let him know you're gathering evidence," Julia warned. "If he gets desperate, he might try to transfer assets or do something to harm you. That could get messy."

"I'll be careful," I said.

After hanging up, I lay on the bed, gently rubbing my belly.

The baby kicked me again.

"Baby, Mommy will protect you," I whispered. "We don't need his help. We'll be okay on our own."
