The air in the cave was so tense it felt frozen in place.

Carter stood right in front of me, all the gentleness drained from his eyes, leaving only a deep, unshakeable sadness.

He stared at my turned-away face, swallowing hard. After a long silence, he finally spoke, his voice rough with a bitter edge.
