When I finished speaking, Charles' face went pale.

He shot up from his seat, his voice cracking with disbelief.

"A divorce agreement? Susan, are you divorcing me?" he asked.

I gathered the papers, had a copy made, and handed it to Charles, nodding like it was the most natural thing in the world.

I said, "Why else would I hand you a divorce agreement if I didn't mean it?

"I've taken care of everything. I'll have my lawyer draw it up, and then we'll finalize the divorce."
