Chapter 5
Every spotlight in the ballroom pointed toward the stage.
For one collective, breathless heartbeat, no one in the room moved.
Then, Sophia smiled. Of course she did. She smoothed the heavy silver silk of her couture gown, lifted her chin with practiced grace, and glanced around the room with the absolute confidence of a woman who believed the script of her life had already been written in gold.
A few entertainment reporters, completely misinterpreting the direction of the lights, had already turned their lenses toward her.
"It has to be her," someone whispered breathlessly right behind me. "I heard the production team has been meeting with Sophia for weeks. The writer personally handpicked her."
Sophia accepted every false assumption with an air of elegant, modest silence. She never denied the rumors. She simply let high society believe whatever lie benefited her ambition.
Beside her, Daniel looked on with quiet, arrogant approval.
He had recently invested millions into Broken Wings Season Two through Carter Technologies' new entertainment division, knowing that if Sophia became the leading lady, it would mean massive exposure and unprecedented profit for his empire.
Everything in his life was a calculation, a cold ledger of business and status. That had become Daniel's entire way of seeing the world.
The only thing he had never learned to measure...
Was the value of the woman standing beside him for five years.
⸻
Up on the stage, the master of ceremonies unfolded the gold card, his theatrical smile widening.
"Ladies and gentlemen, the brilliant creator of Broken Wings has spent the last five years avoiding press interviews, declining prestigious awards, and refusing every single public appearance," his voice echoed powerfully through the speakers, drawing a ripple of knowing laughter from the elite crowd. "But tonight, for the very first time in television history, we have the distinct privilege of welcoming her in person."
Sophia inhaled deeply, stepping half an inch forward. Daniel straightened the lapels of his charcoal jacket. The camera flashes exploded faster, turning the ballroom into a sea of white light.
Then, the host finally read the name.
"Please welcome... Miss Natalie Brooks."
Silence. Absolute, suffocating silence.
For two agonizing seconds, the entire ballroom literally forgot how to breathe. Then, like a synchronized wave, hundreds of heads snapped in my direction.
I didn't move immediately. I simply stood my ground beneath the burning spotlight, because I wanted to violently etch this exact moment into my memory. This was the exact second when every arrogant person who had spent years defining who I was, dismissing me as a pathetic, disposable housewife, realized they had never known me at all.
⸻
Somewhere near the VIP tables, a crystal champagne glass slipped from someone's fingers, shattering violently against the marble floor.
The sharp sound broke the spell.
"No way... did he just say Natalie Brooks?"
"Daniel Carter's wife? The homemaker?"
"I thought Sophia was the writer's favorite! What is happening?"
Murmurs of utter disbelief spread across the ballroom like a wildfire. Daniel turned his head slowly, looking at me, then at the stage, and then back at my face. His expression reminded me of a man frantically trying to solve a puzzle, only to discover that the most crucial pieces had been hidden from him all along.
"Natalie..." his voice was so hoarse it was barely audible through the noise.
I met his frantic, pale eyes with total detachment. "You never once asked what I did before I sacrificed everything to marry you, Daniel."
He opened his mouth to defend himself, but nothing came out. Because he knew I was right. In five years, he had asked about my favorite food, my favorite wine, and even my favorite flowers to pacify me. But he had never asked about my dreams. Never about my career. Never about the endless manuscripts I stayed awake writing until the sunrise bleached the sky. To his selfish ego, those things had never seemed important enough to warrant a question.
⸻
Sophia let out a sharp, unnatural laugh from behind him. "There... there must be some sort of ridiculous mistake!" She yelled toward the stage, her composure cracking. "I've personally met with the show's production team several times!"
The host smiled with clinical politeness. "I'm sure you have, Ms. Laurent. But the production team works directly for the network studio. They don't work for the showrunner."
A few rival actresses in the audience couldn't help but smirk. Sophia's face tightened into a hideous mask. "No... that's impossible. Mr. Hayes personally told me that the writer absolutely loved my audition tape!"
"I did," a calm, authoritative voice answered before the host could speak.
The crowd parted as an older man in a perfectly tailored charcoal suit walked out from the backstage wings. Richard Hayes. The legendary executive producer of Broken Wings and one of the most feared, respected kingmakers in global television.
Sophia hurried toward the edge of the stage as though she had found a savior. "Mr. Hayes, please tell them! You said I was perfect for the project!"
Richard nodded slowly. "You were, Sophia. You were absolutely perfect..." he paused, his eyes drifting over her head to lock onto me with deep respect. "...for the exact role that Natalie wrote. So, unless Natalie personally signs off on your contract..." He let out a cold, dismissing smile. "...you don't have the part."
⸻
The ballroom erupted. Every reporter in the venue broke protocol, rushing toward me with extended microphones and flashing cameras.
"Ms. Brooks! Is it true you've been writing under a legendary pen name?"
"Why stay anonymous for so many years while your husband built his company?"
"Was your marriage the inspiration behind the heartbreaking themes of Broken Wings?"
"Is Daniel Carter just finding out tonight that his wife is the most powerful creator in the industry?"
Microphones surrounded me from every direction, a wall of noise and pressure. I hadn't stood in front of a press line since I was twenty-four years old. Back then, I used to imagine that moments like this would paralyze me with anxiety. But tonight, as the cameras rolled, I felt a strange, liberating calm wash over me. I wasn't hiding in his shadow anymore.
I stepped gracefully onto the stage, the applause swelling into a roaring thunder. Richard Hayes smiled warmly, handing me the silver microphone. "It's all yours, Natalie."
I looked out across the blinding sea of producers, actors, and billion-dollar investors. Then, my eyes settled squarely on Daniel, who looked as though he had been hit by a train. Five years ago, I had quietly disappeared into the dark so his entrepreneurial dream could survive. Tonight, my own dream walked fiercely back into the light.
"I didn't hide my identity because I was ashamed of my work," my voice echoed with crystal clarity through the high-end sound system. "I hid because I foolishly believed that success only mattered if the people I loved were happy. I was wrong."
The entire room held its breath.
"There comes a painful point in a woman's life where sacrificing your own identity no longer saves a relationship," I continued, looking directly into my husband's crumbling gaze. "It only teaches the people around you that your dreams are entirely optional."
For a moment, no one dared to applaud. The raw truth of my words needed time to bleed into the room.
Then, somewhere near the front row, a single person began to clap with slow, fierce pride. Julian. His dark eyes never wavered from mine. A second later, Richard joined him. Then another network executive. Within seconds, the entire billionaire elite of the city was on their feet, unleashing a deafening standing ovation—not just for the success of Broken Wings, but for the woman who had finally stepped out from its shadow.
⸻
The moment I walked off the stage to the backstage VIP lounge, Daniel caught up with me, his usual calculated composure entirely shattered.
"You wrote it?" he choked out, his hands trembling. "Natalie... you are the creator? Why didn't you ever tell me?"
I let out a faint, hollow smile. "I tried to, Daniel."
He frowned, desperation creeping into his eyes. "What do you mean you tried? When?"
"The night you secured your very first seed investment," I said softly, the memory bringing no pain, only clarity. "I cooked a celebratory dinner, and I told you I had life-changing news. But you answered three business calls during our main course, and the conversation never happened."
His expression shifted as the memory violently slammed into him.
"And the year Broken Wings won Best Original Series," I continued, my voice steady. "I was crying, watching the ceremony on my laptop in bed. You walked in and asked me to lower the volume because you had an early investor meeting the next morning. You never even asked what I was watching."
Daniel stared at me, paralyzed as memory after memory returned to haunt him, each one cutting a little deeper into his arrogant pride. "I... Natalie, I didn't know... if I had known—"
"The truth is, Daniel," I held his frantic gaze, refusing to let him look away. "You were simply never interested enough to ask."
⸻
He reached for my wrist instinctively, his grip frantic. "Natalie, please. Let's go home and talk about this. I didn't know."
I gently but firmly removed his hand from my skin, stepping away from his touch. "I know you didn't. And that is exactly the problem."
⸻
Before he could beg any further, Richard Hayes approached us with a folder of legal documents. "Natalie, the board of directors is waiting in the executive suite to discuss the budget for Season Two. There is also one immediate, massive decision that only you have the legal authority to make."
"What decision is that, Richard?"
He smiled, casting a cold glance at the pale man standing beside me. "The casting of the leading actress. The entire network is waiting on your word."
Behind Daniel, I could see Sophia standing near the corridor, her face entirely drained of color. She had spent months manipulating my daughter, destroying my marriage, and gloating about how a mere housewife could never understand real storytelling, all to secure the role that would make her a global superstar.
Now, her entire future, her career, and her dignity hung entirely on a single nod of my head.
Richard lowered his voice, gesturing toward the private conference room. "The board is ready, Natalie. So... who will you choose?"
Behind me, the cameras of the paparazzi were already being lifted, waiting to capture my next move.
Sophia had systematically stripped me of my home, my family, and my husband, fully expecting me to crawl away into the dark and die.
But as I turn toward the executive suite where her Hollywood destiny sits squarely in the palm of my hand, will I play the part of the forgiving, graceful saint she thinks I am—or am I about to show her exactly what happens when you try to steal an empire from the woman who wrote it?
