Chapter 3

Before Victor could finish speaking, his phone rang again. It was still Melissa.

Victor answered in a flash, and Melissa's voice came through, thick with tears.

"Victor, I think I caught a fever from the rain. My head is spinning..." she said.

"Stay home. I'll be there right away," Victor replied.

He hung up the phone without even looking at me and made for the door. At the threshold, he paused and called out over his shoulder. "Stay home and think about what you've done.

"Tomorrow, you're coming with me to pick out the wedding flowers.
