Chapter 1
I spent $100,000 to privately adopt a beautiful baby boy.
Four years later, I discovered he was my husband’s illegitimate son.
My husband, Arthur, was a respected psychology professor at the university.
As a partner at a top medical malpractice law firm, I had spent my thirties cross-examining liars and tearing apart negligent doctors with cold, hard facts. I was not a woman who was easily fooled.
But grief makes you completely blind.
We had a perfect life, except for one thing.
We could not have our children.
For six years, I suffered through the agonizing hell of unexplained infertility.
I blamed my own body and hated myself every time a pregnancy test came back negative. Four rounds of IVF left my stomach black and blue from hormone injections.
The treatments made me gain weight.
My hair fell out.
I spent countless nights sobbing on the cold bathroom tiles.
Arthur always knew when to kneel beside me and when to stay silent.
He learned the exact shape of my grief, then used that knowledge to hide his betrayal inside it.
Looking back, I understood that his tenderness had not been love.
It had been camouflage.
Through it all, Arthur played the role of the perfect, supportive husband.
He held me while I cried, kissed away my tears, and eventually suggested adoption. He even found what seemed like the perfect match for us.
The birth mother, he explained, was a desperate 22-year-old college student who had gotten pregnant by mistake.
Without questioning a single detail, I paid the exorbitant agency fees and welcomed baby Leo into my arms, weeping with pure joy.
But it was all a meticulously crafted illusion.
It unraveled on a quiet Sunday afternoon.
Arthur left his old laptop unlocked on his desk.
I saw an instant messaging app open on the screen.
It was a hidden conversation with a contact named "Mia".
Mia was the name of the brave college student who gave us Leo.
I scrolled up.
My blood turned completely to ice.
The messages were not about the baby's milestones.
Mia wrote: "I miss you so much. Coming over for 'visitation' tomorrow to see our son."
Arthur replied: "I miss you too, baby. Nora bought all those expensive toys you wanted for him."
Mia wrote: "She is so stupid. I can't believe she's actually raising our kid and paying for my tuition."
Arthur replied: "I told you my plan would work. I keep my rich wife, you get a free ride, and we get to keep our boy."
I stopped breathing.
While I was injecting myself with painful hormones, he was sleeping with his student.
When she got pregnant, he didn't want to divorce me and lose his comfortable lifestyle.
He knew Mia couldn't afford to raise a child on her own.
So they conspired to bring his bastard child right into my home.
They made me love him.
They made me care for him and pay for his privileged life.
For four years, I had been raising my husband's love child.
I walked to the nursery and looked at Leo in his crib.
He had Arthur's exact nose.
I sank to the floor in the dark nursery. For one violent moment, I wanted to burn the house down.
But I didn't shed a single tear.
My grief had instantly hardened into something sharp and deadly.
They thought I was just a desperate, barren woman.
They forgot I was a ruthless trial lawyer.
