Chapter 2
To approach Emma, James, the heir of the Palmer family, found himself a part-time job at the bar. This news dumbfounded his rich friends.
In a car accident, James, blinded by love, pulled Emma into his arms instinctively, so his face got wounded by glass shards.
Worried, she snapped at him, "You idiot, you didn't have to do that. There are airbags."
Smiling, he pulled her into his embrace again. "I forgot. My only thought was that I wouldn't let you get hurt."
She didn't expect such an explanation from him, and it struck with her.
Then, she fell in love with him. Later, they got married though there were objections. In the third year of their marriage, Marcus was born.
The family of three led a happy life till Emma lost her left foot in a car accident caused by Sophia.
In the hospital, James, red-eyed, shouted that he would make Sophia sorry.
Emma didn't doubt that.
However, James began to date Sophia. He showered her with gifts and picked her up from work. To drive her home, he even forgot to pick Marcus up in time.
Emma had a bad feeling. Restless, she tugged at James's sleeve and asked, "Didn't you say that you would make her sorry? You are in love with her, aren't you?"
James softly pulled Emma into his arms as always, but his tone changed. "Don't be ridiculous. You're the only woman I love. My kindness is just part of revenge. The happier she is now, the sadder she will be."
Emma was afraid that James would forget his plan and get bewitched by Sophia in the end.
Emma woke up in the hospital. Haggard, she signed Marcus's death certificate.
Lying in the morgue quietly, Marcus wouldn't softly call Emma Mommy, stretch his hands for a hug, or comfort the tearful Emma by saying, "I love you."
"Marcus, I'm so sorry," Emma murmured, grief-stricken.
Her phone buzzed. There came a photo from Sophia.
In the photo, Sophia in a bathrobe still looked hot. In the bottom right of the photo was the hand of a man, and Emma knew that watch on it very well.
Last year, Emma'd personally picked that watch for James as a gift for their anniversary.
Sophia: [I got caught out in the rain, and he insists on keeping me all through the night.]
The next second, she retracted the photo and the message. Then, she sent another message.
Sophia: [Sorry, Emma. I didn't mean to send the photo and the message to you.]
Right then, James's message arrived. [Something has come up, so I will have to spend the night in the company. Have an early night with Marcus. Call me if there is a problem.]
Emma stared at the last sentence in James's message, blinked, and then chuckled.
A moment later, she called her lawyer, and her voice was abnormally calm. "Hi, I want to have my divorce finalized as soon as possible."
'James, I am tired of your game,' she thought.
The next day, Emma showed up at the dance troupe on crutches. She intended to quit.
She stepped into the rehearsal room, saw Anna Hacker, the leader of the dance troupe, pull Sophia to its center, and heard Anna announce, "With all things considered, the management of the company appointed Sophia as the lead dancer and chose flamenco as our new direction."
Sophia looked at Emma and faked surprise with triumph and defiance in her eyes. "Emma, what brought you here? Don't worry. This arrangement is just makeshift. Everybody knows that you're the best dancer here."
The rehearsal room was dead silent. With sympathy, the others looked at Emma's left leg and crutch.
Indeed, Emma was the most gifted dancer in the troupe.
However, she couldn't dance on stage anymore.
"Yeah, you would be makeshift forever if I didn't lose my foot because of you." Emma looked Sophia in the eye and sneered. Instantly, all the gazes at her became subtle.
Hearing this, Sophia changed her expression, and she didn't dare to mess with Emma again.
After a sigh, Anna broke the silence and led Emma to her office.
"Don't take Sophia's words to heart. The decision was made by the management of the company, to be precise, the boss of the HS Group."
Emma looked up with a start.
She thought, 'The HS Group? Isn't it one of the companies owned by the Palmer family? Did James personally designate Sophia as the lead dancer?'
She pretended to be calm and pulled out her resignation letter. "Actually, I came to quit. In my case, it is pointless to stay here."
After a moment of silence, Anna took the letter.
Then, Emma slipped out the back door because she didn't like the sympathy in the eyes of her previous colleagues.
At the entrance of the building, she was surprised to see that familiar silver-gray Cullinan.
Leaning against the car with a bouquet in his arms, James in a simple suit looked charming.
Emma thought that James had come to pick her up.
Right then, she was pushed aside.
"James, you came a little early." With a sweet smile on the face, Sophia hurried to James.
As for Emma, she lost her balance, clutched her crutch, and fell to the ground. Her shoulder then screamed with pain.
