Eight months pregnant, I lay bleeding out beneath the rubble of the old King estate. When Vincent finally arrived, I used the last of my strength to beg him. "Please, save my baby!" He barely looked at me. Instead, he scooped up Freya, his widowed sister-in-law. I had shoved her to safety right before the collapse, leaving her with only a sprained ankle. Yet Vincent wrapped her in his jacket, whispering, "It's okay, Freya. I've got you." When paramedics rushed to save my baby, the EMT threw out rapid questions. "How far along is she? Any drug allergies? How were her checkups?" Vincent froze. After a painful silence, he stammered, "Almost eight months. I don't know the rest." But a second later, when a nurse asked about Freya, he rattled off her medical history without missing a beat. "She’s allergic to cephalosporins and has low blood sugar. Her right foot aches in the cold from an old injury, and she needs warm milk before bed." Shivering in agony on the stretcher, I heard every word. In the end, I lost my baby. Later at the hospital, Freya stood crying at my door. "Fiona, I'm so sorry," she sobbed. "You're young, you can have more kids. But my husband is gone. Vincent is all I have left." Vincent stepped in front of her, shielding her with an exasperated sigh. "Don't make this into something it isn't. The Kings look out for their own. My brother died early, and it’s my duty to take care of both families."
