Chapter 1
Series 1 Chapter 1
The morning after our tenth anniversary, I would disappear from my husband's world.
Tonight, Graham Whitmore sat beside me at our charity gala, looking every inch the devoted husband.
His arm rested behind my chair. His fingers brushed my shoulder whenever he leaned close.
The pregnancy test inside my purse was supposed to be his anniversary gift.
I had imagined waiting until the guests left, placing it in his hand, and watching his face when he learned we were having a baby.
Then Miles, Graham's most trusted assistant, raised his champagne glass and switched to French.
"So, was Vanessa worth the risk?"
Graham glanced at me before answering in the same language.
"More than worth it. Once wasn't enough."
The men around the table laughed.
Graham's thumb moved gently across my shoulder while he described sleeping with another woman.
He believed I couldn't understand him.
He'd forgotten that I had spent part of medical school in Paris.
I looked at the man I had loved for ten years and kept my smile in place.
Only my nails pressing into my palm revealed that anything had changed.
Vanessa Reed was my stepsister, brought into the family when my mother remarried, the girl I had always tried so hard to look after.
Graham's hand moved to the back of my neck, his thumb rubbing slow circles over my skin the way he always did when I was tense.
He leaned closer.
"Darling, are you all right?"
His cobalt blue eyes searched my face with immediate concern.
Graham always noticed the smallest changes in me. He knew when I had a headache before I said anything. He could tell when a crowded room was becoming too much for me.
That tenderness had been real. So was what I had just heard.
I couldn't understand how both truths could live inside the same man.
"I'm fine," I said. "It's a little warm in here."
He picked up my water glass and held it out to me.
"You haven't eaten anything."
"I'll eat later."
His gaze dropped briefly toward my untouched plate.
Then Miles said something to him about the evening schedule, and Graham's attention shifted.
"I need some air."
Graham caught my wrist gently.
"Do you want me to come with you?"
"No. Stay with your guests. I'll only be a minute."
His fingers lingered around my wrist before he released me.
I walked toward the glass terrace overlooking the river. As I passed the other guests, I caught fragments of their conversations.
"Look at the way Graham watches her."
"Ten years, and he's still obsessed with his wife."
"Claire Whitmore has the kind of marriage every woman dreams about."
Once, those words would have filled me with pride.
Now, every compliment felt like another layer of humiliation.
The terrace doors closed behind me, muffling the music and laughter. I gripped the railing until the cold metal hurt my fingers.
My phone was already in my hand.
The encrypted invitation had been waiting for my answer for three days.
Alpine International Medical Research Center.
Ultra-secure. Cut off from the public world.
Before I became Mrs. Whitmore, I had graduated from Hawkins University with an M.D. and a research record Professor Caldwell once called exceptional.
I had chosen him.
My thumb hovered over the screen.
Then I pressed ACCEPT.
The phone rang less than a minute later.
"Claire." Professor Caldwell's voice came through the encrypted line. "The system just confirmed your acceptance. Are you certain?"
I looked through the glass doors.
Graham was still seated at the table. Even while Miles spoke to him, his eyes moved across the ballroom, searching for me.
When he found me on the terrace, the tension left his shoulders.
He loved me.
The knowledge no longer comforted me.
"Yes," I said. "I'm certain."
"You understand what this project requires. Once you enter, there can be no contact with your former life."
"That's what I want."
Professor Caldwell was silent for a moment.
"And Graham?"
My hand moved unconsciously to my abdomen.
"He made his choice."
"Then listen carefully. The car will arrive at five tomorrow morning. Once you get in, the Ghost Protocol begins. Your public identity, financial trail, and nonessential records will be erased or sealed. Claire Whitmore will effectively disappear."
At five tomorrow morning.
I had only a few hours left.
"Do it."
"Once the protocol starts, there'll be no turning back."
"I understand."
I ended the call and opened another number.
This one belonged to my divorce attorney.
When she answered, I kept my voice low.
"I need the papers ready before the party ends."
A familiar voice sounded behind me.
"What papers, darling?"
