Chapter 1
When my husband, Miles, was taken back to the Evans family, he remembered everyone except me.
Desperate to restore his memories, I sought help from every doctor and searched for any possible cure.
I finally managed to get my hands on a rare and legendary miracle drug, an ordeal that left me bruised and battered.
But when I brought it to him, I overheard a friend ask. "You've already got your memories back. Why are you still lying to her?"
Miles chuckled smugly. "I did love her once.
"But a prominent family like the Evans would never accept an orphaned girl as my wife.
"Frankly, I'm just waiting for her to give up and file for divorce quickly."
I stood frozen outside the door, tears streaming down my face.
The young man who once adored me was truly gone.
After a long, heavy silence, his friend spoke cautiously, "But she's been through so much for you. How can you be so heartless?"
Miles replied indifferently, "I recovered a long time ago. Did I ever ask her to find those remedies? Besides, do you really think she went searching for them herself? She always had her assistant with her."
His cold, mocking tone shattered what was left of my heart.
"Exactly," another friend joined in, laughter laced with scorn. "She's just some country orphan. She should be grateful Mr. Evans even looks her way."
So it turned out I was the only one who didn't know. Everyone else was aware he'd regained his memories long ago.
Tears silently traced down my cheeks, but a faint sound gave me away.
"Who's there?"
I quickly wiped my face and knocked. "It's me."
Miles opened the door himself, tension written across his face. "Scarlett... How long have you been here?"
"I just arrived," I said flatly.
His relief was immediate.
"Scarlett, that's not what I meant." He rushed to explain. "I was asking when you got back. Why didn't anyone tell me?"
He took my hands, his voice softening with feigned concern. "It's snowing outside... You must be freezing."
I offered a faint smile and handed him the medicine. "This needs to be taken warm."
Then, turning to his friends, I gave a slight nod. "Sorry for interrupting. Please, carry on."
As I turned to leave, his voice stopped me.
"Scarlett," Miles called out.
I glanced back. "Yes?"
"You just got home. You should rest. Let the servants handle things like this."
He looked at me with such convincing sincerity.
I nodded silently and left.
Less than a minute later, I heard the window open.
The medicine I'd begged for until my knees were raw and bleeding was poured out into the mud.
Back in my room, Bella followed me inside.
Her eyes welled up the moment she saw my frostbitten feet.
"Mrs. Evans, what happened to you?
"How did you get frostbite all over your feet after just being away for a while?
"Your knees... did someone give you trouble?
"You must tell Mr. Evans, make him..."
I gently stopped her before she could finish.
Bella understood immediately, sighing heavily as she looked at me with sorrowful eyes.
She knew all too well that while Miles allowed the household to call me Mrs. Evans, he'd never acknowledged me publicly.
How could someone like him ever stand up for me?
"I'm going to rest for a while. Please wake me when Mr. Evans returns."
"Of course, Mrs. Evans."
Bella brought the medical kit and began quietly tending to my wounds.
Her gentle care reminded me of that time years ago when I'd been burning with fever.
Back then, a young Miles had shown the same concern, staying up all night to cool my forehead with damp cloths.
After I recovered, he'd pestered me endlessly about marriage.
"Scarlett, I love you more than anything. I'm going to marry you." he'd insisted day after day.
