"I stopped the wire transfer," I said.

Leo looked up from his drawing. He had a green marker in his left hand, leaving a small dot of ink on the paper. I turned toward the window, putting my back to the kitchen table, and kept my voice low.

"Finish your picture, Leo. Take your time."

"Claire, listen to me," Ethan said over the phone. A chair scraped against a hard floor in the background. Papers rustled on a desk.

"Vanessa is having a hard time. She needs a stable place for Leo and the new baby. I was just trying…
