By the time he stepped aside, his usual calm demeanor had returned, as if he had not just locked me inside my own office.

“Don’t count on some old document to stop what is already in motion,” he said.

I didn't answer. I took my bag and walked out.

He expected me to run to a lawyer right away, confront Ivy, or break down crying and demand an explanation.
