Chapter 4
That night, someone knocked on my door.
Ever since David came back, I had been sleeping in a separate room and blaming it on being a light sleeper.
I stayed where I was and did not move, and the knocking stopped soon after.
I opened the door and walked out.
Suddenly, I saw him standing right by the door.
David stood there in a black robe, a faint smirk on his lips, his eyes giving nothing away.
"I thought you weren't going to open the door," he said.
He was standing so close, I couldn't avoid him.
This time, I could see his face clearly.
His eyes were shadowed with exhaustion.
He looked like he hadn't slept in ages.
I instinctively took a step back.
"I'm going to check on Dawn," I said.
David came with me to the baby's room.
We stood by the crib.
Just stood there, watching Dawn sleep quietly, her little face so calm and peaceful.
"Go to sleep," David said softly.
His warm breath ghosted over the skin of my neck.
I tensed up, feeling awkward. "You go ahead and sleep. I'll stay here a little longer with Dawn."
David hesitated for a moment.
After a long while, his intense gaze finally faded away.
Only then did I feel the weight of his complicated stare disappear.

In the middle of the night, the nanny suddenly woke me up.
"Ma'am, Dawn has a fever," she said.
I quickly got dressed.
"Where's David?" I asked.
The housekeeper looked uneasy. "Mr. Turner went out for something urgent."
I didn't have time to ask.
I told the driver to head straight to the hospital.
Dawn was born two weeks early.
Thankfully, she was healthy.
This was her first time getting sick.
I was frantic.
I stayed by her side the whole time and only started breathing again when her fever broke.
My phone was almost dead, so I bought a portable charger from a kiosk at the end of the hallway.
On my way back, I saw some doctors and nurses coming out of a patient's room.
A nurse whispered, "Both parents look so healthy. Who would have guessed the boy was this sick?"
As I walked past, I caught a glimpse of what was happening inside the room.
Julia was sitting on the couch, cutting up some fruit.
A little boy was sitting by the bed, playing with his toys.
Someone all too familiar was right there with him.
The little boy pushed his toy car and yelled, "Daddy!"
The man answered with a quiet, "Yeah.
"Still not sleepy? Time to hit the hay."
"Daddy, stay with me!" the little boy pleaded.
"Alright, I'll stay right here until you fall asleep," the man promised.
My blood ran cold.
"Ma'am, Dawn is awake," the nanny called from the door of Dawn's room, grinning.
The hospital at night was way quieter than during the day.
David spun around.
He saw me.
His face changed in an instant.
David stared at me in shock. "Emily, what are you doing here?"
Julia jumped to her feet, looking flustered and biting her lip.
"Emily, it's not what you think! My son is just sick, please, don't misunderstand," Julia pleaded.
David followed me out.
I felt a headache coming on and really didn't want to argue with them here in the hospital.
"Dawn has a fever, so I brought her to the hospital," I said.
With that, I turned and headed back to the room.
Julia caught up to me, grabbing my hand.
She said, "Emily, please, don't get the wrong idea.
"Henry has never had a father. David is only giving him that."
I gave David a cool, indifferent smile as I glanced at him.
"If your conscience is clear, you don't owe me any explanation," I said.
I yanked my hand away from her.
Julia stumbled back, and David caught her.
He let go of her like she had burned him, and then he looked at me and frowned.
