Chapter 2
"Mr. Harrington," Veronica said, stepping forward and meeting his eyes. "I was twenty-two when I married you.
"After everything we've been through, could you at least tell me what I'm supposed to do to walk away from this clean?"
The moment the words left her mouth, it felt like time froze. The store manager and a few coworkers stared at her in stunned silence.
Scott's smile faded, and he looked directly at her, his voice low and serious. "Let me see Domira."
'He actually had the nerve to say her name?' Veronica thought, and she couldn't stop the cold laugh that escaped her.
Looking into Scott's eyes, Veronica felt like she was staring at a reflection of herself from three years ago.
That day was Domira's fourth birthday. It was also the tenth time Veronica had ended up at the police station after a confrontation with Selena Evans.
In the interrogation room, Selena crossed her arms and scoffed, "Scott is my husband. This shameless tramp tried to steal my man. So what if I roughed her up a bit?"
Veronica, sitting across from her, was covered in scratches and looked completely exhausted. "I'm the real Mrs. Harrington. When can I get out of here? My daughter is waiting for me at the hospital."
The officer glanced between the two women, clearly at a loss. Everyone knew Scott had a wife he adored above all else, but he kept her so hidden away that nobody knew what she looked like.
Fortunately, Scott answered the call and showed up at the station soon.
He looked like he had come straight from some event, dressed in an impeccably pressed suit. He gave the officer an apologetic smile. "Sorry, my wife caused you all this trouble."
The officer quickly replied, "No problem at all. But both of these women claim to be Mrs. Harrington. Which one are you here to take home?"
Scott's gaze swept over Veronica, and when he saw the scratches on her face, a flicker of pain crossed his eyes. But in the end, he told the officer, "My wife's last name is Evans."
Selena threw herself happily into Scott's arms, and the two of them walked out of the station together. Veronica sat alone in the interrogation room, her face completely blank.
The officer gave her a look, somewhere between pity and disgust. "Lady, get a grip. Stop chasing after another woman's husband. And stop kidding yourself. You were never going to be Mrs. Harrington.
"That man is crazy about his wife. You were wasting your time from day one."
Veronica kept her head down, saying nothing, but her eyes were full of bitter amusement.
'Yeah, everyone knows Mr. Harrington dotes on his wife. But for the tenth time now, he chose Selena and left me behind,' she thought.
A few hours later, Scott's assistant came to post her bail.
As soon as Veronica stepped out of the police station, she was pulled into a warm embrace.
"Are you upset?" Scott asked, holding her gently, his voice soft. "Selena is still young. I couldn't leave her alone at the station. I hope you can understand."
Veronica's voice was hoarse as she asked, "So it's fine to leave me behind?"
Scott chuckled and pinched her cheek. "Don't overthink it. You're the most important person in the world to me. She could never take your place as Mrs. Harrington."
Veronica suddenly felt completely drained. She gazed at the misty mountains in the distance and said, "Let's get a divorce."
Scott's lips tightened, his expression turning cold and impatient. "Don't be ridiculous. I told you, you'll always be Mrs. Harrington. What more do you want? If you keep this up, you'll walk away with nothing."
Veronica found herself lost in a daze.
A few years back, Scott had promised her, "I'll always love you, always be good to you. You're the most important person in my life."
'When did things start to change? Maybe it was after Selena started working at Harrington Enterprises,' Veronica thought.
At first, Scott tried to explain, "The Evans and Harrington families go way back. My mom insisted that Selena join the company, and I couldn't really say no. Don't worry, I have zero interest in her."
Later, Scott said, "Selena's actually great, and she's really sharp. She's helped me out a ton at the office."
And then, Veronica found Scott and Selena together in their own bedroom, right there on their own bed.
Scott rubbed his forehead, frustration and regret flickering in his eyes, but the first thing he did was pull the sheets up to cover Selena.
He said, "Veronica, I'd had too much to drink. I didn't mean for any of this to happen. People make mistakes. Can you forgive me?"
Veronica's mind went completely blank. Before she could even respond, her phone buzzed. It was Domira's kindergarten teacher calling.
Domira had collapsed and was rushed to the hospital, where the doctors diagnosed her with leukemia.
The entire Harrington family was thrown into chaos. Everyone got tested, but only Scott turned out to be a match for the bone marrow donation.
Veronica couldn't stomach what Scott had done with Selena, but she had no choice. He was the only match for the bone marrow transplant, and Domira's life depended on him.
