My water broke while Samuel was on the phone, calling Julia back. It was 1:27 a.m. I was holding onto the dining table, the hem of my dress already soaked. My belly tightened in waves, and sweat poured down my back from the pain. His phone buzzed nonstop on the table. One name popped up on the screen. Julia. Samuel glanced at me. Paused for half a second. Then he answered. A woman's tearful voice came through. "Samuel, he left me at the rest stop. My phone's dying. I can't be alone. Can you come get me?" Samuel's face changed. He grabbed his keys and headed for the door. I reached out and grabbed his shirt. My voice shook from the pain. He snapped, "Your due date is three days away. Your due date is three days away. Spotting doesn't mean immediate labor. I'll pick her up and be back in two hours at most." I looked at him, my fingers trembling. "Samuel, If you walk out that door today, we're done." He hesitated for a moment, finally picked up the keys, opened the door, and walked away without looking back.
