Chapter 1
Chapter One
The lights of Ethan's graduation party dazzled around me like distant stars, but I felt out of place among the glittering crowd. I'd spent the evening drifting between conversations, smiling politely at people who barely acknowledged my existence. Most of them probably wondered why the Clark family's ward was even invited to such a prestigious event.
I smoothed down my simple blue dress – the nicest thing I owned, but still painfully modest compared to the designer gowns surrounding me. From across the room, I caught sight of Ethan, tall and commanding in his tailored suit, his dark hair perfectly styled. My heart did that familiar little flip it always did when I saw him.
Five years my senior and worlds apart in status, Ethan had always been my protector, my secret crush, my impossible dream. Tonight he was being swarmed by admirers, particularly Theodora Sinclair, who clung to his arm like she'd already claimed him.
Theodora was everything I wasn't – wealthy, confident, and undeniably beautiful in her crimson dress that probably cost more than all my possessions combined. I watched as she leaned close to Ethan, whispering something that made him smile. She handed him a champagne flute, her red-painted nails brushing against his fingers deliberately.
"Quite the couple, aren't they?" a server commented as he passed with a tray.
I nodded mutely, feeling a knot form in my stomach. The noise and heat suddenly became overwhelming, and I slipped away from the main ballroom, searching for somewhere quiet to catch my breath.
The Clark mansion was familiar territory to me after years of living here, yet I still felt like an intruder in certain spaces. I found myself wandering down a hallway to a rarely used parlor, hoping for a moment of solitude.
As I approached the door, I heard stumbling footsteps behind me. Turning, I saw Ethan leaning heavily against the wall, his face flushed and his movements uncoordinated.
"Ethan? Are you okay?" I hurried to his side.
His eyes struggled to focus on me. "Not feeling... right," he slurred, swaying dangerously.
"Let me help you sit down," I said, alarmed by his condition. I'd never seen him drunk before, and this seemed different – more concerning.
He leaned heavily against me as I guided him into the parlor. His weight nearly toppled us both onto the antique sofa.
"Something's wrong," he mumbled, his head lolling against my shoulder. "The room's spinning."
"I should get help," I said, trying to stand, but his hand caught my wrist.
"Don't leave," he whispered, his eyes briefly clearing as they locked with mine. Then confusion clouded them again. "Theo?"
My heart sank. He thought I was Theodora.
"No, it's Vesper," I corrected gently.
But Ethan wasn't listening. His hand moved to my face, fingers tracing my cheek with unusual tenderness. "Always wanted to tell you..."
"Ethan, you're not well," I tried again, increasingly concerned. "Let me get—"
Before I could finish, he pulled me closer, his lips finding mine in a clumsy but passionate kiss that stole my breath and scattered my thoughts. For one dizzying moment, everything I'd ever dreamed of was happening – Ethan was kissing me, wanting me.
But reality crashed back instantly. This wasn't real. He was drugged or drunk, and he thought I was Theodora.
"Ethan, stop," I pushed against his chest. "You don't know what you're doing."
His only response was to pull me closer, his movements becoming more urgent, more insistent. I tried to break away, but part of me – a shameful, selfish part – hesitated. The boy I'd loved from afar for years was holding me like I was precious, desired.
"Beautiful Vesper," he murmured against my neck, and my heart stopped. He knew it was me?
But his next words were incoherent, his eyes unfocused. Whatever was happening, he wasn't in control of himself. This was wrong, all wrong.
Yet before I could untangle myself from his embrace, the world tilted and blurred. Everything that followed came in disjointed flashes – his hands in my hair, the softness of the sofa beneath us, whispered words I couldn't quite catch, the weight of him against me.
I woke with a start, disoriented in the dim light of early morning. For a moment, I couldn't remember where I was or why my body ached strangely. Then I felt movement beside me and turned to see Ethan, unconscious and partially undressed.
Horror flooded through me as memories of the night before crystallized. What had happened? What had I done? Panic seized me as I realized how this would look – the ward taking advantage of the family's son.
I scrambled to gather my clothes, my hands shaking so badly I could barely dress myself. Tears blurred my vision as shame and confusion warred within me. Had I taken advantage of him in his vulnerable state? Had I allowed myself to be swept away by my own feelings when I should have known better?
As I finished buttoning my dress with trembling fingers, I heard Ethan stirring. Paralyzed with fear, I watched as he began to regain consciousness, his brow furrowing before his eyes slowly opened.
I stood frozen in the doorway, guilt written across my face, as his gaze found mine. In that moment, confusion in his eyes hardened into something else – something cold and accusatory that cut me to the core.
"What did you do to me?" he demanded, his voice rough with sleep and anger.
The words died in my throat. How could I explain what I didn't understand myself? How could I tell him that I would never hurt him, that I loved him too much to ever take advantage of him?
But as I stood there speechless, I saw my own confusion reflected as betrayal in his eyes, and I knew with sickening certainty that nothing between us would ever be the same again.
