Chapter 5

Edward showed up at my parents' house at three in the morning.

He stood outside, his shirt sleeves rolled up to his elbows, his hair tousled by the night wind, and a cut on the back of his hand from broken glass.

Mom opened the door, and her expression went cold the moment she saw him.

"What are you doing here?" she demanded.

Edward didn't answer. He just looked inside.

I was sitting at the dining table, holding a cup of warm water.

When I saw him, I barely looked up.
