Chapter 1
Series 1 Chapter 1
My husband was fastening my dead mother’s crown onto another woman’s head.
I stopped in the fitting-room doorway.
Camera flashes filled the room. Vivienne sat before the mirror in a silver gown while Julian carefully adjusted the diamonds in her hair.
A photographer smiled.
"Perfect. Mr. Cross, stand closer. You two look like the couple leading Cross & Co. into its next century."
Julian moved behind her.
He did not correct him.
My gaze fell on the gala schedule beside them.
Red Carpet: Julian Cross and Vivienne Shaw.
Main Table Host: Vivienne Shaw.
Crown Presentation: Julian Cross and Vivienne Shaw.
My name was nowhere on it.
Five years ago, Julian had promised to place that crown on my head at the auction house’s centennial gala.
He had also promised that night would be the end of our secret marriage.
In three days, the world was finally supposed to know I was his wife.
Instead, another woman had taken my place.
Julian saw me in the mirror. Guilt crossed his face.
He stopped the photoshoot and came toward me.
"Evie, I can explain."
"You gave her my mother’s crown?"
"Today is the fifth anniversary of Nathan’s death," he said quietly.
Nathan had been his business partner. Vivienne was his widow.
"She wants to fulfill Nathan’s dream of hosting the centennial. It’s only a tribute."
"Then why is her name on everything?"
Julian reached for my hands.
"You have me every day. She only has this one night."
Only one night.
He had said the same thing when he gave Vivienne my seat at the memorial dinner.
He had said it again when he canceled our anniversary trip because she needed him.
Every time, Vivienne was too fragile to disappoint.
I was simply strong enough to endure it.
The door opened behind him.
Vivienne stood there, one hand resting on my mother’s crown.
"I’m sorry," she said softly. "Julian told me you would understand."
"If you want, I can take it off."
She made no move to remove it.
Julian immediately turned toward her.
"No. The photographs are almost finished."
Then he looked back at me.
"Please, Evelyn. Don’t make this harder than it needs to be."
"What about your promise to announce our marriage?"
"After the gala," he said. "I’ll give an interview. I’ll tell everyone you’re my wife."
Another promise offered in exchange for my silence.
"Are you certain she’ll be standing beside you in three days?"
Julian looked directly into my eyes.
"Yes. But it changes nothing between us. After the gala, I’m coming home to you."
He squeezed my hands.
"You’ll always be my safe place."
He loved me.
He simply believed my love made me permanent.
Vivienne could cry, and he would rearrange the world for her.
I could break, and he trusted me to put myself back together.
"Okay," I whispered.
Relief softened his face.
"I knew you would understand."
I walked out before he could kiss me.
Inside my car, I called Margaret, the manager of my family collection.
"Pull the final authorization files for all twelve Hartwell auction items."
She paused.
"All twelve?"
Through the window, I watched Julian return to Vivienne and adjust my mother’s crown for the cameras.
"Yes," I said. "Every one of them."
Julian thought I had agreed to give Vivienne one more night.
He did not understand that when I said "okay", the thing I gave up was no longer that crown.
