Chapter 5
Series 1 Chapter 5
My signature was real. My consent was not.
The official opened an old authorization.
"You signed this during your knee surgery in 2021. It was never revoked. Marcus used it yesterday."
Authorized representative: Marcus Cole.
Primary debut performer: Bianca Lane.
Credit amendment approved by: Lena Hart.
The official looked at me. "The changes are active in the system. But no one asked you personally yesterday."
The words landed one by one.
Five years earlier, I had lain in a hospital bed with my leg locked in a brace and handed Marcus control of my professional filings because I believed he would protect me.
He had not forged my signature.
He had taken the authority I gave my fiancé from a hospital bed and used it to put another woman inside my mother's final gift.
"Lena, what are you doing in here?"
The oak door opened.
Marcus walked in with his tuxedo jacket undone.
Bianca followed, still holding a glass of champagne.
"The sponsors are waiting for the group photo," Marcus said, stepping between me and the screen.
"Get out of this office."
"You used the 2021 authorization," I said.
"You removed my name from The Last Turn and registered Bianca as a co-choreographer."
Guilt crossed Marcus's face, then vanished behind anger.
"The board wanted a partner they could trust for the preview," he said.
"Bianca rebuilt the changes and kept us in the final. I did what the team needed."
"I only modified a few transitions, Lena," Bianca whimpered from the back, her fingers tightening around the glass.
"I didn't ask for the credit..."
"Bianca, stop." Marcus took her hand in front of me.
"You did the work. You kept the performance alive. You deserve the credit.
"I approved it, and I will not take it back."
I stared at their intertwined fingers. Twelve years of partnership. Three years of engagement.
"And the first public performance?" I asked.
"That belongs to her now. It is already on the broadcast record. You cannot give it back."
"It was ninety seconds," Marcus said.
"After we win, you can dance the full version at a gala. No one will care which came first."
"The first time only happens once, Marcus," I whispered.
"Your finals entry runs through this company," Marcus said.
"Without me, you have no partner, no sponsors, and no place on that floor. When you are done being angry, you will come back."
He was certain I had nowhere else to go.
Before I left the office, I sent Noah one message.
"Eight o'clock. Underground garage. Clear the floor."
His reply came at once. "I'll be there."
I did not answer. I did not cry.
I left the office and walked back into the ballroom.
The host was introducing the board. I went straight to the stage and took the microphone from his hand.
The ballroom fell into a sudden, dead silence.
"My name is Lena Hart," I said. "The statement released in my name this morning was neither written nor approved by me.
"Marcus Cole used an authorization I signed during an injury five years ago to submit it without my knowledge.
"He also changed the credits to The Last Turn without asking me."
A gasp moved through the ballroom.
Marcus pushed through the center aisle, Bianca behind him. "Lena! Get off that stage."
I didn't wait for him to reach the stairs.
I pulled the platinum engagement ring from my finger.
When Marcus reached the foot of the stage, I dropped it onto the competitor badge hanging from his neck.
"You have already chosen your lead partner, Marcus," I said into the microphone.
"So I am returning your fiancée and your old partner at the same time."
I put the microphone back and left the ballroom in chaos.
Once I reached the garage, I blocked Marcus on social media and removed the company directory.
I left his number open for one reason: I wanted every order he gave me in writing.
A matte-black sedan waited near the exit with its hazard lights blinking.
The rear door opened. Noah sat inside in a charcoal suit, calm and watchful.
"Are you alright?" he asked.
"Not yet," I said as I got in. "Take me to the studio. I need the floor."
Noah nodded. "Studio Two is ready. Bring the original score.
"Before we change anything, I need to see what your mother wrote."
At the studio, Noah opened the final page of my mother's score. "Marcus built this turn around you following him."
I stepped into the center of the floor. "Then we change it."
Noah closed the score. "Show me where you want to lead."
For the next three days, Noah and I rebuilt the ending behind closed doors.
Marcus never asked where I was. He only sent instructions.
On the eve of the final, Noah reached for the tablet beside the piano.
Before he could turn it toward me, my phone lit up with a message from Marcus.
"I left your credential active. Be at the arena by five-thirty, apologize to Bianca, and stand with the team for the press.
"Do that, and after the final, we can discuss putting you back on the floor."
I read the message once and blocked his number.
I took my old team credential and studio key from my dance bag, sealed them in an envelope, and handed it to the night receptionist.
"Have this delivered to Marcus Cole's office before check-in tomorrow."
When I returned to Studio Two, Noah had placed a new arena credential beside my mother's score.
LENA HART
PARTNER: NOAH REED
"Marcus's team checks in three minutes before ours," Noah said.
I clipped it to my dance bag.
