Ethan looked at Julia.

“Give it to her,” he said.

The locksmith glanced at me, as if he thought he had misunderstood.

So had I.

“The second key,” Ethan said. “Give it to Julia.”

“Ethan,” Julia murmured. “Maybe this isn’t the right time.”

“Take it.”

The locksmith slowly placed the key in her open palm.

Julia attached it to her key ring. The new silver key clicked against the old one.

There had been two copies.
