Chapter 4

Dawn came. It was a beautiful morning. The fog hadn't lifted yet; the light was that clean, pale grey that can't decide whether to rain. I loaded the last box into the trunk and slid into the driver's seat. The engine turned over. I glanced at the house in the rearview mirror. Three years. I'd laughed here, waited here, cried here. I didn't turn around for a second look. Some places, you look at one more time and you can't leave.
