Chapter 3
Adrian, trailing behind me, seemed hesitant. He stood there with the pen in his hand for a long moment before finally jotting down his name.
I handed the completed divorce registration form to the staff and walked away without looking back.
Adrian hurried after me. "Larissa, slow down. You're pregnant. You need to be careful. Don't want anything happening to the baby."
His words stopped me cold. I stared at him, totally freaked out, like I'd just seen a ghost.
How did Adrian know I was pregnant?
Back in my previous life, I'd basically blurted out that I was pregnant just to stop Adrian from divorcing me.
This time around, I'd only just gotten my pregnancy report, and I hadn't breathed a single word to him.
So how could he possibly knew?
Was it possible that Adrian's time-traveled, too?
Lost in my thoughts, I caught Yvette glaring at me, her eyes full of hate as she trailed behind us.
She couldn't help but blurt out, "She's pregnant? Since when did that happen?"
I kept quiet, just fixing my gaze on Adrian, waiting for him to answer.
Adrian looked uncomfortable as I stared him down, and then, out of nowhere, he grabbed my hand.
He said, "Larissa, I literally just found out you're pregnant. Relax. This whole divorce thing is just for show. There's no way I'm leaving you or the babies behind.
"Speaking of which, you're carrying twins, so you really need to be careful. Once we're back, I'll hire a few nannies to serve you."
Adrian didn't just know I was pregnant. He somehow knew it was twins.
I was sure that Adrian had time-travelled like I did. The moment he touched me, it was like being brushed by a snake.
I jerked my hand away, interrupting him. "Forget it. If we're divorced, let's actually act divorced. I can deal with my own stuff. Save yourself the trouble."
Adrian fixed his gaze on me. "Larissa, I told you. This divorce is just for show. We'll get back together after."
What the hell was up with this jerk? Was he regretting giving me all that money?
I knew better than anyone what Adrian was capable of. There was a whole month before this divorce was actually final, and I couldn't afford anything to go wrong.
I shoved down my disgust and schooled my expression.
I said, "I get it, we're only divorcing on paper. Still, let's stay away from each other from now on—no point starting trouble for nothing.
"Yvette is just too naive and fragile for any of this. I really don't want her getting dragged back into the mess just because you and I can't keep our distance."
My words must've hit a nerve, because Adrian's expression twisted. He was clearly holding something back.
Just then, Yvette, looking ready to faint, barely managed to grab Adrian's hand. "Adrian, I'm so dizzy. I can't see anything..."
She melted straight into his arms, all weak and delicate, instantly stealing all his attention away from me.
I immediately bolted.
To make a clean break with Adrian, I bolted out of City Hall and headed straight for the hospital's maternity ward.
From blood tests to lying on the operating table, the abortion was over in less than two hours.
Getting an abortion wrecked my body. My priority was looking after myself. As soon as I left the hospital, I moved into the city's most luxurious care center to start getting back on my feet.
While I was chowing down on the fancy, super-nutritious meals at the care center, my phone just wouldn't stop buzzing with photos sent from a bunch of random numbers.
There were shots of fingers interlocked, and super affectionate, romantic kisses.
At first, Yvette only sent me sappy couple pics of her and Adrian.
When she saw I wasn't reacting, she started ramping things up.
She wrote: [Adrian and I have already set the wedding date. It's happening next month. He dropped a ton of cash to get the top wedding dress designer to make me eighteen custom gowns.
[Plus, he had a special wedding ring made for me, like some 'one true love' kind of deal. He spent almost 100 million on a diamond ring at some fancy auction.]
