As we stepped out the door, the sunlight was blinding.

Ryan handed me a bottle of water. "Good thing we made it in time. If the money had gone through, getting it back would've been a nightmare."

"Thanks, Ryan," I said, taking the water. My palms were sweaty.

I'd forced myself not to back down at the counter, but now that it was over, fear and disillusionment washed over me.

The man who had once promised to take care of me had trampled on my feelings and shown even less mercy when money was involved.
