Chapter 4
In times of deep sorrow, people could unleash limitless potential.
My mom didn't even care what Asher said. All she wanted was to kick Grace out.
Grace seized the chance to throw shade at Asher. "I always heard Mrs. Bennett was gentle. She has worked for the Blackwell family her whole life and never lost her temper.
"What's going on today? If I didn't know better, I'd think she were your mom, Asher."
There were several people in the hall, and this whole scene was making Asher embarrassed.
He snapped at my mom, "Mrs. Bennett, if you've got time to make a scene with me, why don't you go back and be with Emily and the baby?
"Do you really care about your daughter, or are you just trying to get something from me? If it's money you want, I'll transfer you 3 million right now."
My mom was so furious that she was grinding her teeth, hating that she couldn't say a word.
For my sake, she refused to back down, and Grace, spoiled by favoritism, wouldn't give an inch, either.
In the scuffle, the baby fell off the bed and onto the floor.
"No," I screamed. My soul threw itself forward.
But when I tried to catch him, the baby's tiny body passed right through my hands and fell to the floor.
I collapsed, wailing hysterically. "Asher, that's our baby."
This was the second time. I still couldn't protect him. I let him fall onto the cold, hard floor.
When my mom saw the baby hit the ground, she looked like a dying beast pushed to the edge, unleashing one final desperate attack.
She slapped Grace hard across the face.
Grace cried even harder, her eyes red and brimming with grievance and fear.
"Ah, what was it?" she shrieked. "Mrs. Bennett, what are you doing? Throwing a fit over some kid nobody even wants, and now you're hitting me?"
Asher was truly furious now.
He grabbed the baby by the leg and flung him back onto the bed. "What are you all standing around for? If you can't handle the living, can't you at least move the dead out of here?"
My soul felt like it was shattering. I drifted weightlessly to my son's side. "It's okay, baby. I'm right here. Mommy's here. Does it hurt? Let me kiss it better for you."
Asher had never snapped at my mom like this before. She practically raised him, and no matter what happened between us, he always showed her respect.
But this time, for Grace's sake, he lost his temper. "Mrs. Bennett, I respect you as an elder, but if you don't apologize to Grace right now, then you'll have to move out of the Blackwell residence."
Her eyes, red with anger, stared straight at him as she signed, "Asher, you don't need to kick me out. I'll leave with my daughter."
There was a flicker of doubt in Asher's eyes, as if he wanted to say something more.
But just then, his phone rang. It was Thomas calling.
Still fuming, Asher snapped into the phone, "Tell Emily if she doesn't call me back within one minute, she can forget about ever speaking to me again."
Thomas hesitated for a long time before finally stammering, "M-Mr. Blackwell, the hospital said Mrs. Blackwell never arrived. I looked into it, and she was in a car accident yesterday while taking a taxi. Neither she nor the baby survived.
"Right now, they're at Greenhills Funeral Home, waiting for cremation. Also, Mrs. Harper Blackwell just got back from overseas. She probably doesn't know about what happened to Mrs. Blackwell yet, so you should get ready for that."
