Chapter 1
Series 1 Chapter 1
The day I went to pick up my wedding dress, I watched my fiancé put my wedding ring on another woman’s finger.
For three seconds, I stood outside the chapel door and convinced myself I was seeing the wrong ceremony.
Then I saw Ethan.
He was standing beneath the flower arch we had chosen together.
The black suit on his body was the same one I had picked for our wedding seven days later.
The white rose pinned to his jacket was the flower I had spent an hour choosing because he once told me it reminded him of me.
But he was not waiting for me.
He was holding Chloe’s hand.
A diamond ring slid onto her finger.
The guests clapped.
"Daddy!"
A little girl in a pink flower-girl dress ran toward him.
Ethan smiled immediately and opened his arms.
Mia.
The child I had helped through hospital appointments.
The child I had comforted when Chloe was too exhausted to stay awake beside her hospital bed.
The child who would have another heart surgery in six days.
My hand tightened around the chapel door.
I wanted to believe there was an explanation.
I wanted to believe I had misunderstood.
Then the officiant smiled and lifted his voice.
"Now the bride and groom may kiss."
Ethan leaned toward Chloe.
"No."
My voice was quiet.
But everyone heard it.
The chapel fell silent.
Ethan froze.
"Sienna?"
Chloe stepped back quickly.
"Why are you here?"
I looked around.
At the flowers I had paid for.
At the cake I had ordered.
At the photographer I had booked.
At the man wearing the suit made for my wedding.
"I came to pick up my dress."
Ethan looked at the clock.
For the first time, panic appeared on his face.
"Sienna, wait. I can explain."
I looked at Chloe’s ring.
An oval diamond sat above a hidden blue sapphire.
I knew that ring.
I had spent three months choosing that ring.
Ethan had proposed with his grandmother’s ring because it mattered to his family. Later, he had told me to choose a new ring for the wedding.
"One that feels like you," he had said.
I had found it in a small jewelry shop near the river.
I remembered Ethan laughing at the price.
Then he kissed my temple and bought it.
The jeweler had called me two days ago.
It was ready.
I had planned to collect it after picking up my dress.
Instead, I found another woman wearing it.
"Take it off."
Chloe’s expression changed.
"Sienna…"
"That is my wedding ring."
Ethan stepped between us.
"It’s not what you think."
I stared at him.
"Then tell me what it is."
He opened his mouth.
Nothing came out immediately.
That silence answered more than words could.
Finally, he lowered his voice.
"Mia was scared about her surgery."
I looked at the little girl beside him.
She was holding a bouquet with both hands.
"She wanted to feel like she had a complete family."
My chest tightened.
"So you gave her mine?"
Ethan frowned.
"That’s not fair."
The words almost made me laugh.
My wedding venue.
My wedding flowers.
My wedding photographer.
My wedding ring.
And somehow I was the unfair one.
"You knew I would say no," I said.
Ethan’s expression changed slightly.
Because I was right.
He knew I would not agree to pretend that Chloe was his wife.
He knew I would not allow him to build another family inside the life we were supposed to create.
So he made the decision without me.
"I was trying to help a child," he said.
"No."
I looked at him.
"You were trying to make a choice without letting me choose."
The room became quiet again.
Chloe stepped forward.
"Sienna, please. Mia is terrified. She may not survive this surgery."
Mia lowered her head.
The sight hurt.
Because she was not the person who broke my trust.
She was a child who believed the adults around her.
I walked toward her and softened my voice.
"Mia, your dress is beautiful."
Her eyes brightened.
"Really?"
"Yes."
She smiled.
"Mommy and Daddy got married today."
My fingers went cold.
Chloe immediately interrupted.
"Mia, remember what we talked about."
The little girl looked confused.
"But Uncle Ethan said…"
Chloe’s face changed.
Ethan looked away.
And suddenly I understood.
This was not just a one-time mistake.
Mia thought this was their future.
Ethan had already promised her a family.
A place beside him.
He had simply forgotten to tell me.
I looked at the man I had loved for seven years.
The man who knew every dream I had.
The man who knew that our wedding was supposed to be the beginning of our life together.
And he still decided another woman could stand where I was supposed to stand.
I removed my hand from the door handle.
"Keep the ceremony."
Ethan looked shocked.
"Sienna—"
I picked up my dress receipt from the table beside the entrance.
"I came here for my dress."
I looked at the ring on Chloe’s hand one last time.
"Not to watch you marry someone else."
Then I turned around.
This time, I did not wait for Ethan to explain.
