Chapter 1
Jack Wilson got into a car accident while picking up my car for me, and fractured his lower leg.
When I walked into the hospital, a girl I've never seen started screaming at me.
Her eyes were puffy, her face blotchy, her finger jabbing my chest. "You made Mr. Wilson pick up your car? He broke his leg because you couldn't be bothered. Fractured. Two ribs cracked. Do you care?"
Her tone was so matter-of-fact, like she was scolding a servant who'd messed up.
Not only me, but all of Jack's friends and family who'd come to visit him were left stunned.
Jack shot her a doting look, then turned to me with a placating smile. "She's just looking out for her client. That's her job. And she's always been blunt. Don't mind her."
His heart wasn't with me anymore, so of course I didn't mind.
I stared at the tear-streaked girl until she ran out of steam. "Done? My turn. This is the second time your dealership has pulled this kind of stunt. No reasonable explanation, and you'll be dealing with the cops and the Davis family lawyers."
The girl's face drained of color, and she shot a pleading look at Jack lying in the hospital bed.
Jack's face tightened for a moment. "Queenie, it was my mistake. She had nothing to do with it. I've already sorted out the accident."
I arched an eyebrow and stared right at Jack. "How is it going?"
Jack cleared his throat. "I'm fine. Just a broken leg and a mild concussion, nothing serious."
I cut him off. "I'm talking about the car."
The girl was stung by my indifference, her voice shooting up. "Mr. Wilson is in the hospital, and all you care about is the car? Do you even have a heart?"
"You must be Anna Miller, right?" I crossed my arms, giving her a cold look. "First of all, that car is worth 6 million, and it's a worldwide limited edition.
"Second, Jack is my legal husband. Is it wrong for him to pick up my car for me? And finally..."
I paused, my eyes landing on her hand gripping Jack's hospital gown. "You're nothing but a college student Jack sponsors. Who are you to stand here and interrogate me?"
Anna's face turned bright red, and she instinctively let go of Jack's hospital gown, but still tried to defend herself. "I... I'm only concerned for Mr. Wilson.
"You could've picked up the car yourself, but you made him do it. Now that something happened, you haven't even shown a bit of concern."
I glanced at the message from my assistant on my phone and let out a cold laugh. "You should worry about yourself instead.
"The damage assessment is out. The repair costs are estimated to be over 1 million. Do you want to pay by card or cash?"
Anna's legs buckled, and she swayed, glaring at me with stubborn indignation. "1 million dollars? That's extortion." She faltered, turning pleading eyes to Jack. "Mr. Wilson."
Jack pushed himself up, wincing as the movement pulled at his injuries. He pressed his fingers to his brow, clearly in pain. "Queenie, she's only a kid who barely started working. How could she possibly have 1 million dollars?
"Don't scare her. It was my fault. I'll cover the cost."
Anna's eyes sparkled, and a smug grin spread across her face.
I shot Jack a mocking look. "Wow, Mr. Wilson, you really can't help spoiling her, huh? A whole dealership still isn't enough?"
Jack clearly hadn't expected me to know. His expression froze.
Anna's bravado faded. She bit her lip, sounding pitiful as she tried to explain. "Queenie, if you're upset, blame me. Please don't take it out on Mr. Wilson. He was taking pity on me."
Jack sighed and gestured for Anna to leave. "This isn't your problem. Go on, head back now."
Anna kept her head down, stealing glances at Jack with every step toward the door. As she reached the door, she suddenly spun around and slipped a beautifully decorated glass bottle into Jack's hand.
She looked up at him, her eyes shimmering with vulnerability, so dewy and helpless it was hard to look away.
Any onlooker would swear they were lovers.
Anna lingered, clearly reluctant to leave. As she passed me, she murmured, "Queenie, it was my fault. I let Mr. Wilson drive the car without a proper inspection, and that's why he ended up in an accident.
"Just so you know, that bottle is filled with paper stars I folded myself, wishing him a speedy recovery."
Without a proper inspection? But the dealership called me to pick it up. How did that make any sense? What about the brake failure last time? Was that another "oversight"?
