Chapter 8

I followed Edward to the hospital. As soon as we walked in, a doctor called him over.

"Mr. Grant, there are a few things you need to know"

I didn't wait for him and went straight to Emily's room.

Just as I reached for the doorknob, I heard Emily chatting with her friends inside.

"Emily, why don't you just get rid of the baby already?"

"Yeah, it's not even Edward's kid. Are you really going to have it?"

Stunned, I looked up in disbelief.

'Wait, Emily's baby isn't even Edward's?' I thought, my head was spinning.

"I still need this baby to really make Sophia suffer! I won't rest until I drive that woman out of Edward's life for good. Otherwise, I can't even sleep at night. Don't let Edward find out it's not his!"

"Do you even know who the dad is?"

"How would I know? There were a ton of guys that night"

When I appeared in the doorway, Emily's face instantly drained of color.

"When did you get here? How much did you hear?" she demanded, her voice trembling.

"Didn't hear a thing," I said coolly.

If this had been before, I would've told Edward everything, I was always so afraid he'd get hurt.

But now, I'm done looking out for him.

And honestly, no matter what I said, Edward would never believe a word of it anyway.

As soon as I walked in, I got down on my knees.

The whole room froze, everyone shocked to see me kneeling like that.

Emily frowned, "What are you doing?"

"I'm here to apologize. It's my fault. I shouldn't have pushed you," I said, my voice flat and empty.

I lowered my head to the floor, once, twice, three times, but my face was expressionless.

In the past five years, I even got down on my knees in front of his clients, just to help him out.

He once promised he'd never make me kneel for anyone again.

But now, he's the one making me kneel.

By the time Edward walked in, my forehead was already red and sore. It hurt like hell.

Maybe it was just my imagination, but for a split second, I thought I saw a flicker of sympathy in Edward's eyes.

'He actually feels bad for me? Yeah, right. Like he ever would,' I scoffed to myself.

"Is that enough, Mrs. Grant?" I asked, my voice flat.

Emily sniffled, looking all weak and pitiful. "Edward, what's Sophia doing? I told you not to blame her, why won't you listen to me?"

"She did something wrong, so she should apologize," Edward said, his voice cold as ice.

His tone was freezing—so that flicker of sympathy I thought I saw? Yeah, I was just imagining things.

'A man this cold? Like he'd ever actually feel sorry for me,' I thought bitterly.

"Yes, I should apologize. As long as you forgive me, Mrs. Grant, just say the word, I'll do whatever you want," I said, my voice flat.

"Really? How about you be my bridesmaid on the big day, Sophia?" Emily said with a sly grin, her voice full of sarcasm.

I had no clue what Emily was up to, but honestly, I just didn't care anymore.

When their wedding day comes, I'll already be out of here.

"Fine," I nodded, my face blank. "I'll do it. Thanks for forgiving me, Mrs. Grant."

As I turned to leave, Edward grabbed my hand, hesitating like he wanted to say something but stopped himself.

"Thanks for the chance to apologize, Edward. I'm leaving," I said, my voice flat and emotionless.

I shook off his hand and walked out of the hospital without looking back.

As soon as I stepped outside, my phone started ringing.

"Ms. Lane, how did it go? The car I sent is already waiting downstairs at your place. When will you be coming to my office?"

"I'll be there soon, but can you send the car to pick me up at the hospital instead?" I asked.

Edward stood by the window, and when he saw me get into that black Cullinan, he suddenly felt annoyed for no reason.

He had no clue that by the time he saw me in that car, I was already gone, for real this time, out of his life.
