Chapter 6
Early the next morning, I showed up at work and started wrapping up my duties.
Right then, Emily called. "I'm about to marry Edward, come help me pick out a wedding dress."
I gave the new secretary a quick rundown, then headed straight to the bridal boutique.
As soon as I walked into the bridal boutique, a group of women, all dressed to the nines, swarmed around us.
"Emily, is this your new maid? She looks so plain!"
"Yeah, nothing on her looks expensive. She looks totally broke!"
"Stop it, she's not a maid."
Emily arched an eyebrow, her gaze sliding over me with a smirk. "She's my husband's secretary. He asked her to look after me."
"Secretary?" one of the women said, her voice dripping with sarcasm. "I heard she was Mr. Grant's old flame. Now that the real deal is back, she's just the maid?"
While they were all laughing, I just stared at Emily, keeping my cool. "Didn't you ask me to come help you try on wedding dresses?"
"Yeah, what do you think of this one?" Emily said, showing off as she spun in front of the mirror.
That's when it hit me, Emily was wearing the dress I'd always dreamed of wearing myself.
I'd told Edward before, if I ever got married, this was the dress I wanted.
But I never thought the dress I dreamed of would end up on Emily.
Emily struck a pose in front of the mirror, her lips curled into a proud, mocking smirk.
"So, what do you think? The staff said you came by to check out this dress too. What, Ms. Lane, are you planning a wedding of your own?"
A few days ago, I really did come to see this wedding dress.
Back then, I was still foolishly daydreaming that on my birthday, I'd walk down the aisle in this dress with Edward by my side.
But now, none of that mattered anymore.
Emily was just trying to provoke me, thinking I'd get upset, but she didn't realize I'd already stopped caring.
"No, I was just passing by and took a look," I said, keeping my voice steady.
"Good. If it's not yours, don't even think about it!" Emily shot back, her tone sharp.
After that, Emily exchanged glances with her friends, then sauntered over to me.
"Come on, help me downstairs. I want to check out some other styles!"
I moved to support her as we headed downstairs, but just as we reached the corner, Emily suddenly slipped and went tumbling down the stairs, screaming.
"Ah! My stomach!"
She curled up in pain on the floor, her white dress stained with a splash of blood.
"Oh my god, Emily, are you okay?"
"Seriously, Sophia?! Did you really just push Emily?!"
My brows furrowed as I saw the blood. 'I didn't even touch her!'
"Emily!"
Edward walked in just then, and when he saw Emily lying on the floor, his eyes blazed with fury.
He looked up, his glare like a knife, slicing right through me. "Did you push her?"
"It was her! We all saw it, and so did the staff! Mr. Grant, you have to get justice for Emily!"
"Don't blame her, it was my fault. I slipped," Emily whimpered. "Edward, I'm so scared What if something happens to our baby?"
Emily curled up in his arms, sobbing so hard she could barely catch her breath.
I shook my head, insisting, "I didn't."
Edward gently picked up Emily, and as he passed me, his words were like poison. "Sophia, if anything happens to Emily or the baby, I'll make you pay with your life!"
As Edward walked away, I just stared at that glaring patch of red on the floor. I didn't even try to defend myself.
I knew that once Edward decided something, nothing I said would ever matter.
