Stephen's voice was tight, like he was holding back a storm.

I met his gaze and kept talking, "Miss Bowers's perfume has that cheap, synthetic scent. I've always had a sharp sense of smell, so I notice these things.

"If you're around that kind of perfume for too long, it won't soothe you. In fact, it could give you a nasty headache."

I paused, watching his face grow even darker.

"Your reaction to me feels more like a craving," I said. "An instinctive, almost physical craving for a certain scent."

"Enough," Stephen snapped.
