Chapter 7
Lisa cursed under her breath.
"How could she be so vicious?" she muttered.
Just then, there was a knock at the dorm door.
I opened it to find Adam's mother standing outside, with two relatives following her.
She stormed in and threw a divorce agreement onto my bed.
"Sign it," she demanded.
Lisa stepped in front of me.
"What gives you the right to barge into my dorm?" she demanded.
Adam's mother sized her up.
"And who do you think you are? This is our family business, it's got nothing to do with you, so stay out of it," she snapped.
I picked up the agreement.
It said I'd have to leave with nothing, the baby would belong to the White Family after birth, and I'd have to pay for all the accident damages myself.
How thoughtful.
Adam appeared at the end of the hallway.
Claire was right behind him, carrying a thermos.
"Summer, Mrs. White is only thinking of what's best for you. With everything that's happened, sticking around Adam will only hold him back," Claire said.
Adam's mother jumped in right away.
"No way are we letting someone who crippled another person marry into the White Family," she snapped.
Lisa was so furious she was about to call the police.
Adam pinned her phone down with his hand.
"Keep meddling, and I'll have the hospital suspend you too," he threatened.
Lisa's wrist was turning red from his grip.
I closed the divorce agreement.
"Adam, so the baby goes to you too?" I asked.
He replied, "You're not in the right state of mind to raise a child right now."
I asked, "When I go into labor that night, will you even call an ambulance for me?"
He frowned.
"What nonsense are you talking about?" he snapped.
Claire gently tugged at his arm.
"Adam, maybe she's under too much pressure?" she said softly.
I looked at her.
"What are you afraid of?" I asked.
She froze.
"I'm worried you might do something stupid," she said.
"No, you're afraid I'll remember," I shot back.
Claire's expression stiffened, just for a heartbeat.
But it was gone in a flash.
Adam stepped in front of her.
"That's enough. You're signing the agreement today," he said.
A crowd had gathered in the hallway, watching the drama unfold.
Adam's mother deliberately raised her voice.
"Hey, everyone, judge for yourselves. She ruined someone else's kid, and now she's trying to mooch off my son." she shouted.
Someone started filming with their phone.
Lisa was so distraught she burst into tears.
I picked up a pen and wrote two lines on the last page of the agreement.
'I don't agree.' I wrote.
'I demand Adam walk away with nothing.'
Adam's mother shrieked, "In your dreams."
Adam looked like he was about to explode, his glare could've burned a hole right through me.
I handed the agreement back.
"Take it back and rewrite it," I said.
Claire couldn't fake it any longer.
She kept her voice low, "Summer, don't push your luck. Adam's only giving you a way out because of the baby."
I shot back, "I don't need him to give me a way out."
Just then, my phone buzzed.
There was only one line on the screen.
"North Line materials are secured. Waiting for your orders."
I snapped my phone shut.
Adam didn't catch the message, but he saw the sender's name. It's Mr. Shepherd.
His face darkened.
"You're still contacting outsiders?" he snapped.
I let out a cold laugh.
"So, are you scared of outsiders, or is it the insiders that really freak you out?" I shot back.
Three days later, the accident investigation team showed up.
The guy leading the team was Mr. Shepherd, in his fifties, rocking an old jacket and carrying a briefcase so worn it was almost white.
As soon as he walked into the hospital, the Head of Administration's smile vanished.
"Mr. Shepherd, what brings you here?" he asked.
Mr. Shepherd shot him a look.
"An eight-year-old kid had to have his leg amputated while being transferred, and the internet's going wild. You don't think this needs investigating?" he said.
The Head of Administration quickly agreed.
When Adam got the call and rushed over, Claire came along too.
She was dressed simply today, her work badge pinned to her chest, really putting on an act as the innocent nurse who happened to get dragged into all this.
