Chapter 3
Chapter 3
After hanging up, Edward came to see me and went over the doctor's instructions with me in detail.
When he finished, it suddenly hit him about those calls. He frowned a little and asked, "Who was calling you?"
I didn't want to tell him, and honestly, I couldn't be bothered to make up another lie.
His eyes turned cold as he leaned in, ready to press me for answers, but my phone rang again.
When he saw it was my best friend calling, the chill in his eyes quietly faded away.
"Sophie hasn't been feeling well because of her pregnancy, so I need to stay with her for the next few days. If you need anything, just let the butler know," Edward said.
His eyes grew more serious. "Claire, you've always been so sensible. This time, I hope you won't get upset over something so trivial. As I said, once you're better, we'll have another child."
With that, he got up and left the room.
Even though we were living in the same house, I didn't see Edward at all for the next few days. He spent almost every moment by Sophie Shaw's side, barely leaving her room.
I was so overwhelmed by grief that I locked myself away in my room for a long time. It wasn't until Nathan called again to check on me that I finally forced myself to leave my room.
But the moment I stepped out of my room, I realized the entire place had completely changed in just a few days.
The decor downstairs was all different, and even the flowers I'd planted myself in the backyard were gone, replaced with tulips, just because Sophie loved them.
Edward was standing with Sophie in a sea of tulips, his hand gently resting on her belly, his eyes overflowing with tenderness.
One of the maids couldn't help but say, a little enviously, "Ms. Shaw, Mr. Foster treats you so well. We've never seen him treat anyone like this before."
Another maid added, "Mr. Foster must really love you to care so much about the baby. The little guy is so lucky.
"He's got his own nursery and playroom before he's even born. Mr. Foster even hired someone to design them. He really went all out."
Listening to the maids, my whole body went cold.
When I found out I was pregnant, I was over the moon. I couldn't wait to share the news with Edward.
But all I got from him was a flat, "Got it."
I put my heart into planning everything for the baby, but all he said was, "What's the point of preparing so soon?"
I used to think he just didn't like kids, but now I realized that he just didn't want mine.
My hands instinctively drifted to my now-flat belly, and my mind was flooded with memories of that night.
When Edward got a call from Sophie, sobbing that she'd been bullied by some thugs, he lost all control, tearing down the road to get to her, not caring at all that his pregnant wife was right there beside him.
After the crash, he didn't even stay with me and just sent someone to drop me off at the hospital, while he went straight to Sophie.
In the end, Sophie came out completely unharmed, while I lost our baby for good.
Sophie called out in that sweet, almost mocking tone, "Claire, you finally decided to come out."
Her voice pulled me back to reality, snapping me out of my memories.
As I looked up, my eyes met Edward's gaze.
For a brief moment, he quickly looked away, almost as if he was trying to avoid me.
But Sophie didn't notice a thing. She hurried over, took my hand, and tugged me along to the nursery next door.
"Claire, you have to see the nursery Edward made for the baby. It's so warm and adorable!" Sophie chirped.
I was numb all over, like my spirit had been drained away, as she pulled me into the room that was supposed to belong to my child.
As soon as we walked in, I spotted a lace nightgown draped over the crib.
A flash of smugness flickered in Sophie's eyes, but she hurried over and snatched the nightgown away.
She turned to Edward, who'd just come in behind us, and teased, "This is all your fault for not cleaning up. Now Claire saw it. How embarrassing!"
