Chapter 4
The next morning.
My parents took me to the Sterling Residence.
Mrs. Sterling opened the door, her face lighting up as soon as she saw me.
"Fiona, did you come to see Lucas?"
"Oh, that boy ran off to Disney with Mia. Honestly, he goes out to have fun and doesn't even think to invite you! I'll have a word with him later, don't you worry!"
I didn't say anything, just quietly moved out of the way.
So my parents behind me were now in full view.
"Mr. and Mrs. Grant, what brings you here?"
Mrs. Sterling blinked in surprise, then quickly ushered my parents inside.
Mr. Sterling hurried over from the living room, all smiles, handing out cigarettes and pouring coffee like he was hosting a VIP.
After a few polite exchanges, Dad didn't beat around the bush. He just came right out with it.
Dad got straight to the point and explained why we were there.
When Mrs. Sterling heard we were there to call off the engagement, she practically jumped out of her seat.
She spun around to look at me, her eyes wide with shock.
"Fiona, did that brat Lucas do something to you?
"Just tell me, and I'll set him straight! Come on, you don't have to break off the engagement over this!"
Mr. Sterling quickly jumped in, trying to smooth things over.
"Hey, Grant, these two have been inseparable since they were kids. It's just a little argument. No need to take it this far, right?"
Dad just sat there, his face cold and silent.
Mom gave a tight, fake smile, her voice chilly.
"That engagement was just something the elders joked about back then. It was never meant to be serious. And who knows, maybe Lucas already has someone he likes. Keeping him tied to this engagement is just getting in his way."
Mrs. Sterling's face dropped, her voice going icy. "What are you trying to say? Lucas has always been crazy about Fiona. He's never looked at anyone else!"
She turned on me, suddenly zeroing in.
"Now that you're in college, are you too good for Lucas? Or did you find some other guy you like better?"
Before I could even get a word out, Mom cut in, her face cold. "That's right. She's just not interested in him anymore!
"Mrs. Sterling, are you really clueless about what your son's been doing? He's supposed to be engaged to my daughter, but he keeps taking the side of others and making her feel like she doesn't matter."
"Looks like you care way more about Mia than you ever did about my daughter. If you two are such a perfect match, the Grant family will just let you have what you want."
Seeing Mrs. Sterling about to argue, Mom cut her off, her voice sharp and unyielding.
"Let's be honest, the Sterling family just isn't on the same level as ours. You're simply not a match for my daughter."
Mrs. Sterling's face changed dramatically, but she was left completely speechless.
Back in the day, my dad and Mr. Sterling worked at the same place.
But then my dad quit and went into business, and after years of hard work, the Grant family became one of the new rich families in town.
Meanwhile, Mr. Sterling was still just a mid-level manager.
The room was thick with tension.
Suddenly, the door swung open.
Lucas walked in.
Someone was trailing behind him.
It was Mia, clutching my favorite LinaBell plushie.
