Chapter 1
Chapter One
The scent of pine and tension filled the circular stone chamber as moonlight streamed through the skylight, illuminating the faces of pack members gathered for the emergency council. My father, Alpha Richard Morgan, stood tall at the center of the room, his weathered face grave as he addressed the assembly.
"The rogue attacks along our eastern border have increased threefold in the past month," he announced, his voice echoing off the ancient walls. "Three of our patrols have been ambushed. Six warriors injured. Two dead."
A collective growl rumbled through the chamber. I felt my stomach tighten as I scanned the room for Alexander. His seat beside my father remained conspicuously empty, the polished oak chair a silent accusation. Where was he? Tonight of all nights?
"Our resources are stretched thin," my father continued, his silver-streaked hair gleaming in the moonlight. "Without reinforcements, I fear the Moonveil Pack faces extinction within the season."
The council erupted into anxious murmurs. Elder Thorne's gnarled hand rose shakily. "What options do we have, Alpha?"
My father's eyes found mine across the chamber, and I knew what he would say before the words left his lips. We had discussed this possibility in private for weeks, weighing the cost against our pack's survival.
"An alliance," he replied. "With the Sterling Pack."
The chamber fell silent. Everyone knew what such an alliance would require. The Sterling Pack, led by the notoriously ruthless Alpha William Sterling, controlled the richest hunting grounds in the region. Their warriors were legendary, their territory impenetrable. They had no need for political ties—unless sealed by blood and bond.
*Where are you, Alexander?* I thought desperately, my eyes darting to the entrance. He should be here, standing with me, fighting for our future together.
"Alpha William has agreed to extend his protection," my father continued, "in exchange for a mate bond with a member of our bloodline."
Inside my mind, Lyra, my silver wolf, paced anxiously. *He's not coming, Isabella,* she whispered. *He's with her again.*
I closed my eyes briefly, feeling the weight of every gaze in the room. The pack needed this alliance. My people were dying. And Alexander—my destined mate, my childhood love, the future Alpha who should be fighting for our pack's survival—was absent. Again.
*He's with Victoria,* Lyra growled, her anger mixing with my heartache.
Before I could second-guess myself, I rose to my feet. The council chamber quieted instantly.
"I volunteer," I said, my voice steadier than I felt. "I will mate with Alpha Sterling to secure our alliance."
My father's eyes widened slightly—not with surprise at my offer, but at my public declaration before Alexander had even been consulted. In that moment, I realized I'd known for weeks this would be the outcome. Each time Alexander had dismissed council meetings to tend to Victoria's latest "emergency," each night he'd failed to return to our quarters, each morning I'd woken alone—my heart had been preparing for this moment.
"Isabella," Elder Thorne spoke softly, "you are Alexander's destined mate. The Moon Goddess herself—"
"The Moon Goddess would not wish to see her children slaughtered," I interrupted, feeling Lyra's strength flowing through me. "If my sacrifice can save this pack, then I offer it freely."
Lyra howled mournfully within me, but her resolve matched mine. *We do what we must for the pack.*
My father's shoulders straightened as he nodded solemnly. "My daughter speaks with wisdom beyond her years. The alliance with the Sterling Pack will proceed."
The chamber erupted into whispers. Some faces showed relief, others pity, and a few—those closest to Alexander—displayed undisguised shock. I stood unflinching under their scrutiny, even as my heart crumbled within me.
"The ceremony will take place at the next full moon," my father announced. "Alpha Sterling arrives tomorrow to finalize the terms."
As the council dispersed, I remained rooted to the spot, my eyes fixed on Alexander's empty chair. Through the pack bonds, I could feel him—not in danger, not in distress, but calm and content in Victoria's quarters across the territory.
Lyra's growl reverberated through my bones. *He doesn't deserve us.*
As I turned to leave, I caught the pitying glances exchanged between pack members. They all knew where Alexander was. They all knew what this meant.
My mate had made his choice. Now I had made mine.
