Chapter 4
The fallout from the wedding drama spread faster than I expected.
Some guest had filmed the moment Richard's card was declined and his father-in-law had to step in to pay, and that clip quickly found its way online.
By the next morning, the hashtag [Groom Exposed as Fake Millionaire After Lavish Three-Million Wedding] was trending locally.
The video captured everything in crystal-clear HD: Richard's face flushing red then turning ashen, and Vivian looking on the verge of tears.
The comments section was flooded with reactions.
[LOL, this year's biggest joke.]
[So embarrassing to watch. His act totally fell apart.]
[Poor bride, marrying a guy who's all show and no money.]
I scrolled through it all, completely unmoved.
Richard, of course, wasn't going down without a fight.
Pretty soon, a new story started spreading.
Lots of influencer accounts began pushing a sad story about a "hardworking man bled dry by his greedy ex-wife, who still tried to give his new wife a perfect wedding even after losing everything."
In their version, I was the cruel, calculating ex who took all his money and froze his accounts on his wedding day just to humiliate him.
And he was the victim who never stopped caring.
Then Vivian jumped in with a post dripping with false innocence, playing the victim to perfection.
Without naming names, she painted herself and Richard as star-crossed lovers fighting against all odds, while I was cast as the jealous ex, out for revenge.
She even topped it off with a teary-eyed selfie, looking fragile and utterly pitiful.
Public opinion shifted instantly. Strangers began swarming my socials, flooding my posts with hate.
[You're the definition of a toxic woman.]
[He's moved on. Why can't you let him be happy? Get over it.]
[Just give him his money back. What do you need that much for anyway?]
Cheryl was so mad. She ranted over the phone about creating a hundred burner accounts to fight them all.
"Don't," I said, stopping her. "Jumping in now will only stir the pot."
"So we're just supposed to sit back and let them trash your reputation?" Cheryl's voice was tight with frustration.
"Trust me," I said, calming her down. "Let them talk. The louder, the better."
It was all going according to plan.
Richard's desperate attempts to whitewash his image would only expose the cracks in his own story.
After hanging up, I coolly opened my laptop and reached out to a finance blogger I knew.
He had a reputation for digging up corporate dirt and was known for his sharp commentary, which made him quite influential.
I didn't reveal who I was, but posed as an "insider" and sent him a carefully selected set of evidence.
The file included a list of the assets I brought into the marriage, all of which were seriously expensive.
There were bank statements showing the 300 thousand dollars I transferred from my personal account to fund his startup, plus a copy of the angel investment contract from my father's company.
It also contained records of all the expensive properties and cars he bought for his own family after he succeeded.
On their own, these pieces might not mean much.
But together, they told the whole story of a man who used his wife's family to get ahead and then forgot where he came from.
I kept it strictly factual, with no personal comments.
I was confident a pro like the blogger would see the real story behind the evidence.
Sure enough, he replied in under half a day with just four words: [Wait for my update.]
Two days later, a long-form investigative piece titled "The 'Devoted CEO': Business Genius or Calculated Betrayal?" blew up all over the internet.
While it didn't name names, every detail, from the company's founding year and key funding rounds to that over-the-top, viral wedding, matched Richard's story perfectly.
Written with a sharp, unflinching style, the piece tore down Richard's "rags-to-riches" image piece by piece.
It revealed that from his initial funding to his biggest business breakthroughs, his ex-wife and her powerful family were always there, pulling the strings.
The blogger concluded with a powerful question: "What do you call a man who drains his wife's wealth and her family's resources, kicks her out, and then splurges on a dream wedding with another woman? True love or the ultimate betrayal?"
The article exploded online and turned the tide of public opinion.
All of Richard's online supporters went silent, while comments supporting me and bashing the "gold-digging husband" flooded in.
I closed the browser, took my coffee, and looked out at the busy street.
Richard's paid trolls couldn't fight the truth. And this was just the start.
