Chapter 4
I was packing up, planning to leave this house to Madison, but when I heard that, I changed my mind on the spot.
I said, "Are you joking? I bought this house before we got married, and I've been paying the mortgage all by myself. Even if your name was added after the wedding, you have no right to kick me out."
Madison widened her eyes in disbelief. "Nathan, are you even a man?"
I shot back, "No matter what, there's no way I'm letting a woman like you get away with it. Do you really think I don't know about you and Jeremy?"
I showed her the video Cecilia sent me. "We're getting divorced because you cheated on me. You're the one at fault. What right do you have to fight over this house?"
Madison said flatly, "You knowing about me and Mr. Landon doesn't change anything. You're nothing compared to him."
The video caught her off guard, but it didn't take long for her to connect the dots.
She realized my change in attitude wasn't because I got laid off. It was because I'd found out about her affair.
Realizing she'd been exposed, she dropped her act, curing, "Mr. Landon is valued and trusted by the board for his outstanding abilities. He's about to be promoted to general manager.
"And you? You're just a loser who's about to lose his job. Who do you think I should pick?"
"As if Jeremy would ever marry you..." I couldn't help but let out a mocking laugh.
She fired back, "A loser like you won't need to worry about that."
Madison's face lit up with pride and happiness as she pictured her future with Jeremy. "Mr. Landon already promised he'll leave his wife for me. What we have is real. It's something a pathetic loser like you could never understand.
"Honestly, if you hadn't been so obedient, I would've dumped you long ago.
"Ever wonder why you were the first to go? Mr. Landon can't even stand you. You're pathetic, just flailing through life with no control. And still, you think you're in a position to insult him?"
I couldn't help but laugh out loud. "Do you even know who Mr. Landon's wife is? And you still dared to mess around with him?
"You really think he became vice president on his own? Come on. His wife, Nadia Trentham, is the company's second-biggest shareholder and the vice chair. The only reason he's got that job is because of her.
"A guy like him would never have the guts to leave someone like Nadia for you. And if she finds out you've been hooking up with him behind her back... Don't be shocked if you're the next to get fired."
My words drained the color from Madison's face. Her voice trembled, nearly cracking. "W-What? How do you even know all this? You think I'd just believe some story you made up? Keep dreaming."
She tried to deny it, but the fear and doubt in her eyes said everything her words couldn't.
I shook my head. "You're the HR manager, and you can't even see something this obvious? Honestly, that's just pathetic."
I shot Madison a pitying glance. There was nothing left to say.
Opening the door, I walked straight out, taking a stroll in the garden by the neighborhood.
After hesitating for a long time, I finally pulled out my phone and dialed a number.
I said, "Jack, please tell my dad that I'm willing to return to the Sanders family."
Jack sounded so happy on the phone. "That's amazing. You're finally making up with your father. After you were kidnapped all those years ago, he never stopped looking for you.
"He's always felt bad for not being there for you growing up. Now, he wants to give you everything he has to make it up to you, if you're willing to forgive him. You're still family, after all."
"Where are you right now? I'll send someone to pick you up right away."
"I'm at Willowshade Park, next to Evergreen Heights." I gave him my location and then hung up.
Taking a deep breath, I gazed up at the dazzling stars above, my mind a chaotic mess, with thoughts flying in every direction.
I was the son of Zachary Sanders, the boss of Skybound Group, which was a Fortune 500 company.
This was a secret only my adoptive father and I shared, not even Madison knew about it.
Back then, a flashy convoy of luxury cars rolled up in front of me. A middle-aged man in a sharp suit stepped out of a Rolls-Royce Ghost, introduced himself as the Sanders family's butler, and handed me his business card.
When he told me I was Zachary's only son, my first thought was, 'Yeah, right. This guy's a scammer.'
But then I figured that someone this loaded probably wouldn't be a scammer, so I agreed to do the DNA test with Zachary.
When the results came out, my mind just went totally blank.
The DNA test showed I really was Zachary's son.
I took the report back home and asked Dad straight up. That was when he finally came clean. He admitted he'd always wanted a boy, so he bought me from some trafficker and raised me as his own.
Even though Dad had kept the truth from me for over twenty years, he always treated me like his own and never once treated me badly or made me feel less than family.
So instead of resenting him, I actually felt grateful and wanted to pay him back for everything he'd done for me.
When Zachary asked me to return to the Sanders family and accept my true identity, I couldn't help but feel conflicted and lost.
I'd grown up in an ordinary family, and I was already used to the simple life of a regular guy.
Now, with my whole world turned upside down overnight, I was left completely at a loss.
But now, I finally knew what I should do.
I wanted to vent my anger. I needed to make them pay.
