Chapter 2
Eva stormed in, her face twisted with anger. But when she saw me looking so miserable and pitiful, she couldn't help but burst out laughing.
She said, "I thought Ryan would at least treat you better now that you're pregnant. Look at you, a total mess. You're such a failure as a woman."
"I was worried you'd play the victim and win him over, but turns out I was wasting my time," Eva said smugly as she walked over to my bed and casually fiddled with the IV tube in my arm.
A sharp pain shot through my whole body, and I couldn't help but let out a soft cry.
"You've already gotten what you wanted, so why do you have to humiliate me?" I said, my eyes burning with hatred and resentment toward Eva.
I used to believe I shared a bond with Ryan that went beyond life and death. I saved his life, after all.
But even so, he never showed me any kindness. Instead, he treated me even more unfairly, all for Eva's sake.
Years of neglect and disappointment had twisted me into someone consumed by bitterness and resentment.
Eva smirked triumphantly. "Don't think you can walk away like nothing happened after getting rid of the baby and getting divorced. If I can't erase you from Ryan's heart for good, I won't have a single moment of peace."
Her hand inched closer and closer to the IV tube. If I said I wasn't scared, I'd be lying. After all, I knew exactly what a woman driven mad by jealousy was capable of.
Right now, as a disabled person, I was completely helpless. All I could do was pray for a miracle.
"What are you doing?" A familiar voice called out from the doorway.
Eva's hand shook, but she still ripped the IV out of my arm, tearing skin and all. I watched as she knocked over a glass bottle from the table and then deliberately pressed her hand down onto the shards.
Blood gushed out of her hand, so much that it was hard to look at. Eva pretended it was just a careless mistake, like some innocent little girl who didn't know any better.
Ryan rushed over, his face full of concern as he helped Eva up. "You're hurt so badly. Get a nurse here right now!"
Then Ryan shot me a look. "Your legs are busted, not your hands. Don't you even know how to hit the call bell?"
I watched them acting like a perfect couple and didn't say a word.
Silently, I lifted my blood-soaked right hand and reached for the call bell.
Only then did Ryan notice my IV had been yanked out, blood streaming down my arm. But he still kept up that stubborn, proud front, refusing to show any real concern.
He snapped, "It's just a small wound. Grab a cotton swab and stop the bleeding yourself. If anything happened to Eva while she was here, could you even handle the consequences?"
Eva whimpered, sounding all wronged. "I have no idea what happened. I was just trying to help Yvonne adjust the IV drip, and suddenly there was this force and I got shoved right into the table."
She dramatically spun the story, making it sound like I, someone who couldn't even use her legs, was the culprit behind everything. Any outsider would find it laughable.
But Ryan stared at me, his eyes icy cold. "Yvonne, someone like you, an ungrateful brat, deserves to go straight to hell."
The nurse walked in and saw the mess.
She let out a gasp at my wound. "Who was so careless? We just managed to get the IV in, and someone ripped it out with that much force?"
Ryan looked a bit awkward. "Who else would it be? Obviously, she did it herself."
The nurse gave him a look like he was clueless. "This woman just got out of surgery. We don't even know if the anesthesia has worn off yet.
"Her legs are paralyzed, and her upper body muscles are partially atrophied. We taped the IV so tightly to prevent her from accidentally pulling it out. Sir, if you have no medical knowledge, please stop questioning our expertise."
As she bandaged my arm, she let out an exasperated sigh and frowned. "Honestly, these days any random person thinks they can just barge into a hospital. Ms. Lane, stay still. I'll go get a doctor to take a look."
Ryan got put in his place and had to swallow his pride, mumbling to the nurse, "The lady next to me is injured, too. Can you bandage her up?"
The nurse gave him an angry look. "Can't you walk? Go to surgery yourself. Her injury's nothing. Just a shallow cut that bleeds a little. It only looks scary.
"And make sure you pay for all the medicine you broke. The ER doesn't have time for your drama."
