Chapter 5

Waiting for trial was harder than jail itself. I spent forty-seven days in the detention center. The three fingers on my right hand never received treatment. The bones healed crooked, so I could still move them, but I couldn't bend them.

The guards rotated twice. The first group ignored me. The second spat into my food when they brought it.

They said, "Mr. Ford said you can have food, but you'll have to pick it up off the floor with your mouth."
