Chapter 3
I took a deep breath, digging my nails into my thumb to keep myself from falling apart.
"Fine, I'll donate," I said.
I knew that even if I refused, my mom would use her silver tongue to get her way. She'd already thrown away her dignity for Rebecca.
So I might as well throw away my life, too.
"What are you talking about? How could I possibly have killed my own daughter?" my mom snapped, her voice trembling with anger.
She rushed forward and grabbed the phone. On the screen, her face was contorted with emotion, and the way she looked at me was anything but pleasant.
The nurse recoiled. She glanced at my mom, then at the phone, and let out a mocking laugh.
She said, "So you're the lawyer who dragged your eldest daughter to court for your second daughter? No wonder your kid ended up dead. With that attitude, you totally brought it on yourself."
My mom froze, the phone slipping from her hand. She muttered, "My daughter is dead?"
The nurse rushed over to pick it up, but the screen was already shattered.
"You're paying for my phone!" the nurse snapped.
My mom seemed oblivious to the chaos around her. It was like the whole world had been muted.
She wandered down the hospital corridor, lost in her own world. She didn't even hear the nurse calling after her.
My dad rushed out after her, but the nurse stopped him and explained everything. She even told him the truth about how I died. My dad just stood there, completely stunned.
He numbly transferred the money to the nurse for her phone, moving like a zombie.
"Dad, don't be like this. She always talked back to Mom and even dragged her to court. A daughter like that isn't even worth mourning," Rebecca said.
My mom heard Rebecca trash-talking me from behind, whipped around, marched over, and slapped her hard across the face.
"Don't you dare talk about your sister like that!" my mom snapped.
Rebecca was left dazed by the slap. She probably thought my mom and my dad hated me so much that talking trash about me would win her points with them, but she never expected it would actually piss my mom off.
Rebecca reacted desperately, slapping herself over and over, muttering nonstop.
"It's all my fault. I shouldn't have killed my sister. I'm the one who deserves to die!" she wailed.
My mom's expression softened a bit seeing Rebecca like that, but it wasn't enough for her to actually comfort Rebecca.
Seeing her desperate act wasn't getting the reaction she wanted, Rebecca suddenly grabbed a scalpel from a nurse's cart and cut her own wrist.
"I'll go join my sister. I shouldn't even be alive!" she cried.
Watching blood pour from Rebecca's wrist, my mom's heart finally softened. She rushed over and pulled Rebecca into her arms, her heart breaking.
"I'm sorry, I shouldn't have hit you. Please, don't do this. If something happens to you, how am I supposed to go on?" my mom sobbed.
With that, my mom grabbed Rebecca and hurried off to find a doctor to bandage her up.
Watching all this play out, I just found it funny.
My mom's guilt over my death was genuine, but whenever Rebecca started hurting herself, my death meant nothing. She'd always side with Rebecca, no matter what.
It had always been this way. I had already gotten used to it.
Honestly, it was kind of ironic. People said that the dead would always win over the living, but even after I was gone, I still couldn't take Rebecca's place in my mom and my dad's hearts.
Rebecca was always so sly, even her self-harm stunts were carefully staged in the hospital, where help was always close by.
If she really wanted to die, she wouldn't have gone for all this drama.
Honestly, I had given up on this family anyway. If they wanted to keep stirring things up, I would let them.
I just wanted to get away from them as soon as possible.
