Chapter 1
Series 1 Chapter 1
For six years, I had been Victor Holt’s secret wife.
Tonight, he introduced me as his mother’s nurse—and proposed to another woman.
Victor stood beneath the crystal chandelier at the Holt Foundation’s annual charity gala, Claire Whitmore’s hand resting elegantly on his arm.
The ballroom overlooked the dark waters surrounding the private island. Medical donors, board members, and reporters filled every table.
I stood near the stage in the silver gown Victor had chosen for me.
That morning, he had kissed my forehead and made the same promise he had repeated for six years.
“Tonight, no more hiding.”
I believed him.
Then he lifted his champagne glass.
“I would also like to thank Sophia Mendez,” he announced. “My mother’s dedicated private nurse. Her care made tonight possible.”
Applause filled the ballroom.
My breath stopped.
His mother, Isabel, sat at the front table. For six years, I had monitored her heart condition, accompanied her to appointments, and held her hand through frightening nights.
Behind closed doors, she called me her daughter.
Now, she lowered her eyes and studied the ice in her water glass.
She knew.
Victor turned to Claire.
The Whitmore family controlled the medical foundation whose support Victor needed for his new cardiac program. I had known they were negotiating.
I had never known Claire was part of the agreement.
Victor opened a velvet box and dropped to one knee.
The cameras flashed.
“Claire, will you build this future with me?”
She said yes.
The applause became deafening as he slid the diamond ring onto her finger.
My husband had just become another woman’s fiancé.
When Victor stepped off the stage, Claire remained surrounded by reporters.
He passed me without stopping.
“Wait in the private suite,” he murmured. “We’ll talk when this is over.”
It was the same suite we had shared during every visit to the island—the room where I was allowed to be his wife as long as no one could see me.
I opened my handbag and removed the black keycard.
Victor glanced down, apparently satisfied that I was going upstairs.
Instead, I dropped it into his champagne.
Golden liquid splashed over his white cuff.
His smile froze.
“Sophia,” he hissed. “What the hell are you doing?”
I turned and walked out.
He caught me in the corridor, closing one hand around my elbow.
“What was that?” he demanded. “Do you want every reporter in that room watching us?”
“I was returning your key.”
“You’re upset. I understand that.”
“Do you?”
His expression softened into the familiar look that had kept me waiting for six years.
“The Whitmore partnership is essential to the foundation. The engagement is a public arrangement. It doesn’t change what we have.”
I stared at him.
“You proposed to another woman.”
“Publicly,” he said. “Privately, you’re still my wife.”
The cruelty was in how reasonable he thought he sounded.
He expected Claire to stand beside him in the light while I continued warming his bed and caring for his mother in the dark.
“Does Claire know you’re already married?”
Victor’s jaw tightened.
“That isn’t your concern.”
“I’m your wife. It is exactly my concern.”
“Not tonight.” He pushed the wet keycard back into my coat pocket. “Go upstairs. Calm down. When the gala is over, I’ll explain everything.”
Then he returned to his fiancée.
I watched him walk away and understood that he had mistaken six years of love for permanent obedience.
I took the keycard out again.
But this time, I kept it.
Not because I intended to wait for him.
My passport, nursing license, and the few belongings I had brought to the island were inside that suite.
I was going upstairs to take back everything that belonged to me.
Then I was leaving my husband behind.
