Daniel bought dessert on the way home because Claire was angry.

That was what he told himself when she didn't answer his messages.

He understood why she was angry. He missed Lucy's recital. Any mother would be upset about that.

Lucy's performance was over. He couldn't change that now.

He could still make the evening better.

He chose her favorite chocolate cake and the lemon tart Claire always said was too expensive.
