Ethan arrived a little before nine.

The doorbell rang twice.

I left the door closed for a moment.

He still had his key.

I stood in the entryway, watching the lock for a few seconds.

There was no third ring.

Instead, I heard a key slide into the lock from the other side.

The deadbolt had barely started to turn when I pulled the door open.

Ethan's hand was still on the key.

He looked at me and stopped.

I held out my hand.
