Chapter 1
Everyone knew that the domineering Alpha, Lucas Shaw, was a moody and ruthless madman. In just three years, he'd gone through fifty therapists.
None could handle him until I came along.
I'm Samantha Cook, a Beta with A+ psychic aptitude, and I could tame the most uncontrollable Alphas in the country.
However, he wouldn't play by the rules. He used his pheromones to suppress me the moment he saw me, called an emergency meeting at three in the morning, and wrecked his office after suffering an emotional meltdown.
He said, "If you can't fix me, don't even think about walking out of this building."
I smiled as I signed the contract, saying, "We'll see."
Later on, however, he was the one who whispered in the sunroom, "I dare you to take one step out."
He was also the one who, during his rut, gritted his teeth and asked, "Why aren't you afraid of me?"
The maniacal Alpha would cling only to me.
Perhaps I'd also gone crazy because instead of fearing him, I wanted to save him.

[Here lies Samantha Cook, 28—died from being a busybody.]
If my epitaph said that, honestly, no one would bat an eye.
To be fair, pretty much every major twist in my short life could be traced back to my damn professional instincts and that overdeveloped sense of justice of mine.
Case in point: right now, I was standing in the CEO's office at Shaw Corporation, watching a textbook case of workplace bullying play out right in front of me.
That male Omega was barely 22, the suppression patch on his nape already drenched in cold sweat.
Trembling, the young man handed over a document. "M-Mr. Shaw, this is the Marketing Department's Q3 report..."
Lucas scoffed. "Trash."
His pen scraped harshly across the document. Without looking up, he commanded coldly, "Redo it."
"B-But, Mr. Shaw, tomorrow's the deadline..." the young man stammered.
"Then stay late and finish the work."
Lucas finally looked up, his eyes icy and menacing. "Otherwise, get the hell out of Shaw Corporation."
The young man's legs gave out, and he nearly fell to his knees.
I watched the suppression patch on his nape grow increasingly red, and my professional instincts immediately kicked in.
"Using pheromonal coercion against subordinates constitutes a violation of employment laws, Mr. Shaw," I blurted out.
My voice cut through the deathly silence of the office with startling clarity.
The pen in Lucas' hand stilled.
Lucas, known as the tyrant of the business world, slowly raised his head, and for the first time, I saw his face in full view.
He had a sharp jawline, deathly pale skin, and eyes so inky black they seemed devoid of life.
"Samantha Cook?"
When Lucas uttered my name, his voice was cold and heavy as if passing judgment.
"Yes." I strode toward the Omega, pulling a spare suppression patch from my bag. Handing it over, I said, "The restroom is at the end of the left hallway. You might want to take care of that."
The Omega cast a terrified look at Lucas, and only after receiving a cold, dismissive snort did he stumble out in panic.
I turned to the notorious Alpha tyrant, flashing a polite fake smile. "Classy move, Mr. Shaw, picking on a newly presented Omega."
An icy chill instantly enveloped the office.
Lucas rose to his full height, his towering 6.3 feet frame casting an oppressive shadow that seemed to shrink the room.
Any ordinary Omega would be weak in the knees by then. However, I was a tough-as-nails Beta with an A+ psychic aptitude.
"Do you know why I chose you, Dr. Cook?"
He rounded the desk, his pheromones slicing through the air like invisible blades scraping against my skin.
I couldn't smell his pheromones, but the crushing pressure was unmistakable.
"Is it because I've been the top consultant in 'Psychological Medicine' for three years running?"
I cocked my head, a teasing glint in my eyes. "Or is it because I'm immune to Alpha pheromones?"
Suddenly, Lucas gripped my chin with controlled menace. "If you fail to cure me, your reputation will go down the drain."
I chuckled.
My reaction made Lucas narrow his eyes dangerously.
"Mr. Shaw, I know this condition all too well."
I calmly nudged his hand aside. "Classic PTSD... The good news is that since you're still seeking professional help, you're not entirely beyond saving yet."
A crack flickered across his stony expression.
Pressing my advantage, I said, "Name your price."
"Come again?"
"My consultation fee."
I pulled out my phone calculator and added, "Given your high-risk factor, this calls for hazard pay."
Lucas stared at me for a solid ten seconds before breaking into a sudden, humorless laugh.
That laugh was as grating as a dull knife scraping against sandpaper, and a shiver ran down my spine.
"Jenny!" Lucas barked toward the door.
"Have the contract for Dr. Cook drawn up," he ordered.
He then turned back to me, his gaze both dangerous and amused. "You either cure me or lose your mind trying. You must pick one."
I signed my name on the contract with a confident flourish. "Let's see how it goes."
