When I came to, the first thing I saw was a stark white ceiling staring back at me.

The air was thick with the sharp tang of disinfectant.

I wiggled my fingers. Was I in a hospital?

As I struggled to prop myself up, Donovan pushed the door open and stepped in.

"Ashlee, my dear... you've been through hell." Deep regret and sorrow etched lines across his face.

The doctors and nurses nearby shot me looks filled with sympathy.
