The morning air bit at my skin as I stood at the edge of the patrol gathering, trying to make myself invisible among the larger wolves. Elder Kael's voice droned on about increased hunter activity near the southern border, but my attention kept drifting to Marcus, who stood rigid at the front of the group, his dark eyes scanning the assembled patrol members.

"We'll work in pairs," Marcus announced, his voice carrying the authority that made every wolf straighten unconsciously. "Stay within howling distance of your partner at all times."
