Chapter 1
I checked my suitcase one final time, meticulously running through my mental checklist. Sunscreen with SPF 70, wide-brimmed hat, lightweight cover-ups – all the essentials for someone whose skin rebelled against even the gentlest sun exposure. My fingers traced the neat stacks of carefully folded clothes, each one selected for our romantic Caribbean getaway.
"Three hundred and forty-seven dollars," I murmured, glancing at my expense tracker app. My half of the hotel costs, plus estimated food expenses and activities. Jake and I had always split everything down the middle – it was the foundation of our relationship. Equal partners in everything.
My phone pinged with a text from him: *Almost there. Got coffee.*
I smiled, zipping the suitcase closed. After three years together and my recent promotion, this vacation felt like a milestone. A celebration of us. Maybe even the trip where he'd finally propose.
The apartment door clicked open, and Jake strode in, his tall frame filling the doorway. His dark hair was perfectly styled despite the morning humidity, and he carried two coffee cups, the familiar logo of my favorite café visible.
"Morning, babe," he said, handing me the smaller cup. "All packed?"
"Just finished," I replied, taking a sip. Perfect – oat milk latte with a hint of vanilla, exactly how I liked it. These little gestures always made my heart flutter.
Jake settled into the armchair, stretching his long legs. There was something in his posture – a slight tension in his shoulders that hadn't been there yesterday.
"So," he began, his tone casual. Too casual. "I wanted to let you know that Madison's joining us for the trip."
I nearly choked on my coffee. "Madison? Your childhood friend Madison?"
"Yeah," he said, not meeting my eyes. "She's been having a rough time with her graduate program, and I thought the break would do her good."
The room suddenly felt colder. Madison Brooks – the gorgeous, leggy blonde who appeared in too many of Jake's social media photos, always standing just a little too close to him. The woman whose name came up in almost every story from his past.
"You invited her on our romantic vacation?" I tried to keep my voice steady. "Without asking me?"
Jake's expression shifted to one I knew well – slight annoyance tinged with dismissal. "Come on, Lauren. It's not that big a deal. She's just a friend who needs a break."
"But this was supposed to be our celebration," I said, hating how small my voice sounded. "For my promotion."
"And it still is," he insisted, leaning forward. "Look, she already bought her ticket. It would be cruel to uninvite her now."
I swallowed hard, pushing down the disappointment rising in my throat. This wasn't the first time Jake had made decisions without consulting me, but it was certainly the most significant.
"Fine," I conceded, not wanting to start our vacation with an argument. "When does she arrive?"
"That's the thing," Jake said, his lips curving into a smile that didn't quite reach his eyes. "She's meeting us at the airport."
Three hours later, we were checking into the stunning oceanfront resort in Miami. Madison had spent the entire flight chattering about her graduate program, her perfect tan glowing against her white sundress, while I'd been wedged in the middle seat between her and Jake.
The resort was more luxurious than I'd expected based on the budget Jake had shared with me. Marble floors gleamed beneath our feet, and floor-to-ceiling windows showcased the turquoise waters beyond.
"Your suite is ready, sir," the receptionist said, handing Jake three key cards with a practiced smile.
Our room – or rather, suite – was spectacular. A spacious living area opened onto a private balcony with ocean views, a fully stocked bar gleamed in the corner, and two doors led to what I assumed were bedrooms.
"Wow, Jake," Madison breathed, spinning around. "You really went all out."
Jake grinned, dropping his bag on the plush sofa. "Only the best for us." He grabbed one of the key cards and strode toward the larger door. "Madison, you'll take the master bedroom."
I froze. "Wait, what?"
"The master has the better view," Jake explained, pushing the door open to reveal a massive king-sized bed and an ensuite bathroom with a jacuzzi tub. "And Madison gets migraines, so she needs the quieter room away from the hallway."
"And where am I sleeping?" I asked, already knowing the answer.
Jake gestured to the sofa. "It pulls out. Super comfortable."
"You're putting me on the sofa bed?" I couldn't believe what I was hearing. "In a suite I'm paying half for?"
"God, Lauren, why are you being so dramatic?" Jake sighed, exasperation clear in his voice. "It's just sleeping arrangements."
Madison stood in the doorway of her – my – bedroom, a small, satisfied smile playing on her lips. "I can take the sofa if it's such a big deal," she offered, her tone making it clear she had no intention of doing so.
"No, no," Jake said firmly. "Lauren's fine with it. Aren't you, babe?"
I looked between them – Jake's expectant face, Madison's barely concealed triumph – and felt something crack inside me. This was supposed to be our special trip, our celebration. Now I was an afterthought in my own vacation.
"Whatever," I said quietly, wheeling my suitcase to the corner of the living room. "I'm going to unpack."
As I unzipped my carefully packed bag, I heard Madison's delighted laugh from the master bedroom, followed by Jake's deeper chuckle. The sound twisted in my chest like a knife.
What I didn't know then was that this was just the beginning of the humiliation Jake had planned for me. Paradise was about to become my personal hell.
